Rouyn-Noranda’s Sven Andrighetto enjoys 5-point night: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Sven Andrighetto, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)

Andrighetto (1G-4A, +3) gave a command performance by factoring into all Huskies scoring in a 5-2 home win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The 19-year-old Zurich native moved into second in Quebec League scoring behind linemate Jean-Sébastien Dea (2G, +2) with his five-point night. He started fast by setting up Dea fewer than five minutes into the game and by scoring an unassisted short-handed goal 69 seconds later. Andrighetto was in on another short-handed goal in the second period, then assisted on two insurance tallies in the final frame. All told, the Swiss world junior forward has 13 points in his first six games; when he's sharp, the improving Huskies are a difficult team to beat.

No. 2 star: Morgan Klimchuk, Regina Pats (WHL)

The 17-year-old led an inspired effort by the Queen City kids, who beat Moose Jaw 4-1 to give coach Pat Conacher a victory in his first game back after being away due to a family emergency. Klimchuk (2G, +1) scored 2:37 apart — sandwiched around a tally by Toronto Maple Leafs first-rounder Morgan Rielly — late in the second period to point the Pats toward a 4-1 verdict. Moose Jaw was on the power play with a chance to draw within one goal when Klimchuk was sent in on a breakaway by Trent Ouellette (2A, +2), burying his rebound for the goal. Later in the frame he rapped in Chandler Stephenson's cross-crease pass and the Pats never looked back.

No. 3 star: Madison Bowey, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Bowey (2G-1A, +4) was a force as an offensive defenceman as Kelowna pulled away for a 7-0 win over the struggling Vancouver Giants 7-0. It really was not a blowout since the Rockets led by only two through 40 minutes. Bowey bagged the first goal of the night thanks to some setup work by captain and Nashville Predators second-rounder Colton Sissons (2G-2A, +3). The outcome was still in doubt in the third when Bowey jumped into the rush 5:09 into the third and took a Filip Vasko feed before deking Giants goalie Liam Liston to open both a three-goal lead and the floodgates.

Rockets goalie Jordon Cooke made 28 saves for the shutout.

Honourable mention: Mathew Dumba, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Dumba (1G, +1) showed why the Minnesota Wild drafted him No. 7 overall last summer, leading the Red Deer Rebels to a 5-3 win at Saskatoon that kept the MasterCard Memorial Cup-host Blades in their early-season funk. Dumba, in his second game back from a checking-to-the-head suspension, scored a highlight-reel goal in the second period, splitting the Blades defence and scoring while sliding on his knees. He also helped the Rebels go 6-for-7 on the penalty kill. Red Deer's recent addition up from, Matt Bellerive (3A, +1), was the only Rebel to have a multi-point game. One of Bellerive's assists came on Cory Millette's eventual game-winning goal in the third, which came on the ensuing rush after goalie Patrik Bartosak (32 saves) had made a breakaway stop on Winnipeg Jets draft pick Lukas Sutter.

Honourable mention: Michael Schumacher, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)

Schumacher (1G-1A, +3) was the game's first star as Sault Ste. Marie surmounted (Soomounted, surely?) a three-goal deficit to shade Saginaw 6-5, sweeping a home-and-home series with the Spirit. The Swede opened scoring with a short-handed salvo off a feed from defenceman Darnell Nurse. That was the only 'Hounds offence for a while, but Mark Petaccio (two goals) cut into the deficit just 71 seconds after the Spirit went ahead 4-1 and 16-year-old rookie Jared McCann scored a beautiful second-period goal to make it a game again.

In the third, Sault Ste. Marie scored goals 17 seconds apart to go from trailing to leading; Schumacher set up linemate Nick Cousins' game-winner with 7:24 left.

Potent notables — The Victoria Royals had a four-goal comeback to beat Medicine Hat 4-3 in overtime, with Brett Cote getting the winner after Alex Gogolev forced overtime with 1:13 left in regulation ... Draft-year goalie Eric Comrie had a 35-save shutout for Tri-City ... In the OHL, Florida Panthers prospect Vincent Trocheck had three points for Saginaw ... In the QMJHL, draft-year forward William Carrier scored twice for Cape Breton ... Blainville-Boisbriand goalie Etienne Marcoux stopped 23-of-24 shots to win his season debut.
