P.E.I. Rocket’s Josh Currie hits 100 points with a 5-point night: Friday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Josh Currie, P.E.I. Rocket (QMJHL)

After potting two apples throughout the first two periods against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, overage forward Josh Currie decided he didn’t want to wait any longer to hit the 100-point single-season plateau. The Charlottetown, P.E.I., native scored a hat trick in the final frame to hit a triple-digit season and lead his squad to a 6-0 victory. The icing on the cake for Currie’s big night is that he scored his three goals in three different situations: the first on even strength, the second down a man, and the third on the power play.

Currie now sits tied with teammate Ben Duffy (2A, +1) as the leading goal scorer in the QMJHL. It is safe to say the 5-foot-11, 198-pound centre ate his vegetables and didn’t neglect the weights in the offseason as he has more than doubled his point total from last season of 46.

Lost in the shuffle of standout P.E.I. performances, Antoine Bibeau stopped 23 shots in between the pipes for his fourth shutout of the season.

No. 2 star: Emile Poirier, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Down by six to the Val-d’Or Foreurs after the opening 20 minutes, it seemed it was all over for Gatineau. But Olympiques head coach Brian Cushman must have had an intermission speech for the ages as his squad stormed back to win it 8-7 in a shootout.

Poirier’s monster second period is what swung the momentum over to the Olympiques. The 18-year-old winger scored three goals and an assist, cutting the Foreurs’ lead down to one with the help of an Olivier Knight-Rouleau marker. In the third period, Poirier assisted Shawn Chapman’s second of the night to tie the game up at six. Following the Foreurs and Olympiques exchanging goals, Chapman went on to score the shootout winner for Gatineau.

No. 3 star: Connor Rankin, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Rankin (3G-2A) carried the Americans to a 6-3 win over the Kootenay Ice. Down by two in the opening frame, the 2013 draft prospect assisted markers from Parker Bowles and Brian Williams to tie it up. After notching his first of the contest in the second period, Rankin potted his second roughly 15 minutes into the third and closed out his hat trick with an empty-net marker.

Honourable mention: Alessio Bertaggia, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Bertaggia (3G-1A, -1) exploded in the latter half of the game with the Chiefs down 3-2 to the Everett Silvertips. After scoring a late second-period goal, the Switzerland native added a pair and an apple to lead his team to a 6-3 win.

Honourable mention: Boone Jenner, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

After the Kingston Frontenacs erased the Generals’ two-goal lead, Jenner (3G) swung the momentum back in Oshawa’s favour. The Columbus Blue Jackets prospect notched two goals within four minutes to put the Generals back up by two before Brian Hughes scored to close out the 5-2 victory.

Potent notables: Halifax Mooseheads puck-stopper Zachary Fuacle stopped 34 of 35 shots in a 3-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats… Francois Brassard turned away all 27 shots he faced in the Quebec Ramparts’ 4-0 win over the Victoriaville Tigres… Charles Hudon (1G-3A, +2) and Lukas Sedlak (2G, +1) had big nights in the Chicoutimi Sagueneens’ 5-2 victory against the Sherbrooke Phoenix… Artur Gravus netted a hat trick in the Owen Sounds’ 9-1 shellacking over the Erie Otters…Winnipeg Jets prospect Adam Lowry (2G) lifted the Swift Current Broncos over the Moose Jaw Warriors in a 2-1 game… New York Rangers prospect Josh Nicholls potted two in the Saskatoon Blades’ 6-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers… Regina Pats overage forward Lane Schiedl netted a pair in a 6-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders… Tyson Ness found the back of the net twice in the Red Deer Rebels’ 4-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes… Steven Hodges (2G-1A, +3) led the Victoria Royals over the Vancouver Giants in a 5-3 win.
