Kingston Frontenacs’ Robert Polesello scores highlight overtime goal (VIDEO)

When it comes to sticking the dagger in a rival whose playoff hopes are hanging by a thread, it's hard to do it with more élan than the Kingston Frontenacs' Robert Polesello displayed on Friday.

Who doesn't like seeing one of the Ontario Hockey League's smallest players — 5-foot-7, 170 pounds — get the better of a 6-foot-2¾ defender and a 6-6 goalie? Moments after Ottawa's Dante Salituro hit the post while Polesello was in the penalty box, the Bolton, Ont., native returned to the fray, broke in one-on-one against Jacob Middleton, went inside-out and sifted a backhand by goalie Philippe Trudeau for a 5-4 win.

That completed a three-goal rally that gave Kingston a 5-4 win. Ottawa would need to beat North Bay on Sunday and have Mississauga lose outright to Kingston to force a one-game playoff for the OHL's last playoff spot.

The 67's have had bad luck during this final week — No. 1 centre Erik Bradford broke his right femur on Tuesday against Kingston, and overage leader Ryan Van Stralen was suspended after getting a game misconduct for instigating a fight — after already putting themselves in a tough spot. Yet it managed to nurse a two-goal lead over Kingston, which was without potential top NHL draft pick Sam Bennett, for 55 minutes. Then Polesello, off a touch pass from Corey Pawley into a gap in the Ottawa coverage, scored with a fairly spectacular finish to create some late-game lightning.

And that was just the antipasto, before the main course.
