Jordan Binnington tops John Gibson in top-goalie duel: Saturday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jordan Binnington, Owen Sound Attack (OHL)

With Team Canada coach Steve Spott on the opposing bench and first place in the conference up for grabs, Binnington made 35 saves to help Owen Sound blank the Kitchener Rangers 4-0. The 19-year-old, who's in the mix for a spot on the national junior team, was the picture of certitude as he stymied the Rangers early and bought time for the mythical three-headed beast CamelCat — Cameron Brace, Gemel Smith and Daniel Catenacci, who have scored 55 per cent of Owen Sound's goals — to wear down likely Team USA starter John Gibson.

Binnington made 16 saves in the first period, while Catenacci (1G-1A, +3) and Brace, with a short-hander, delivered second-period strikes to open a lead. The shutout was all the more impressive because the Attack had to face eight power plays. The victory was Binnington's franchise-record 66th.

No. 2 star: Anthony Mantha, Val-d'Or Foreurs (QMJHL)

Mantha (3G-1A, +3) led Val-d'Or to a 6-3 win over the P.E.I. Rocket with a hat trick. The scary thought is that he could have a had a four- or five-goal night with more puck luck, since he pinged a post and also had a breakaway attempt nixed by Rocket goalie Antoine Bibeau.

The 18-year-old NHL draft prospect started out by setting up Cédrick Henley and converting a Henley feed. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Mantha then put Val-d'Or ahead for good before the second period was out and scored the clincher. He has 20 goals in 22 games this season, almost as many as he scored all of last season.

No. 3 star: Luke Siemens, Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)

Siemens continued to get payback on the Edmonton Oil Kings for last spring's playoffs, when he yielded 20 goals during the Moose Jaw Warriors' five-game loss in the Eastern Conference final. The overage netminder was pressed heavily throughout much of the night, ultimately stopping 47-of-50 shots to help P.A. prevail 4-3 in overtime and beat Edmonton for the third time this season. The Raiders had a 3-0 lead get away, but Siemens stopped 16 shots in the final period of regulation to allow them to hang on by their fingernails. Eighteen-year-old Shane Danyluk's OT winner lifted the Raiders (15-6-0-2) back into first place in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

Honourable mention: Oscar Dansk, Erie Otters (OHL)

Dansk returned from missing a game due to flu to make Guelph Storm shooters feel sick. The 18-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets second-rounder stopped 47-of-49 shots and stifled 3-of-4 shootout attempts to help Erie escape with a 3-2 shootout win over the Guelph Storm. Guelph is one of the dangerous offensive teams in the OHL, but Dansk vexed them all night. All told, he has been credited with at least 40 saves in four of the seven Erie wins he's presided over.

Fifteen-year-old Connor McDavid assisted on both Otters goals, giving him 30 points in 23 games.

Honourable mention: Ryan O'Connor, Barrie Colts (OHL)

O'Connor (1G-2A, +3) threaded a wrist shot through traffic for the tying goal in Barrie's 6-5 overtime comeback win over the Windsor Spitfires. The Spits were up 5-3 with three minutes to play, but a cross-checking penalty enabled Boston Bruins prospect Anthony Camara to strike with 2:17 left. After another Windsor penalty, O'Connor got the equalizer, leading to the winner from Winnipeg Jets prospect Mark Scheifele (2G).

Potent notables — Prince George overage forward Ryan Hanes scored his first goal for the Cougars against Kamloops, his former team, but the Blazers took a 5-4 shootout decision. Kamloops' JC Lipon scored twice and became the first CHL player to reach 50 points, with linemate Colin Smith right behind at 49 ... Tri-City Americans 17-year-old goalie Eric Comrie stopped 40-plus shots for the second night in row, stopping 42-of-44 to beat Kelowna 3-2. He has a 2.17 average and .926 save percentage in six November starts ... Reid Petryk had two goals, including the winner in Everett's 6-5 win over Vancouver... Kootenay's Mackenzie Skapski had a 28-save shutout vs. Brandon; top 2014 draft prospect Sam Reinhart had two goals ... St. Louis Blues prospect Ty Rattie tallied twice in Portland's home win over Medicine Hat ... Defenceman Luke Fenske (3A, +3), led the Regina Pats to a 3-2 win at Victoria ... In the OHL, Jake Cardwell's first goal for Belleville was the OT winner against Plymouth. Malcolm Subban stopped 30-of-32 shots for the Bulls, who had been 0-3 in overtime ... Michael Nishi notched his first QMJHL shutout with a 29-save effort for Gatineau against Shawinigan; 17-year-old Emile Poirier potted a pair for the Olympiques ... Raphaël Bussières and 17-year-old Valentin Zykov had two goals apiece to help Baie-Comeau beat Rimouski to run its point streak to 14 games (12-0-0-2).
