No. 1 star: Christopher Clapperton, Rimouski Océanic (QMJHL)

The Océanic added Clapperton this summer for occasions such as Sunday. The overage notched four points to spark Rimouski to a 7-3 takedown of the Moncton Wildcats in the big showdown for first overall in the QMJHL (takedown might be sensational since the 'Cats were on the last leg of a 3-in-3 that included playing Blainville-Boisbriand and Quebec, two other top teams).

Clapperton (2G-2A, +4) scored 6:31 on a setup from Frédérik Gauthier and Samuel Morin of Team Canada fame. The Florida Panthers draft choice scored again 2½ minutes later for a 2-0 Rimouski lead. When Moncton got the goals back, Clapperton set up Gauthier to restore the lead, earning his third point of the game's first 14 minutes. Clapperton also had another primary assist late in the second period when defenceman Charles-David Beaudoin (2G-1A, +5) buried to open a 5-3 lead. Moncton was unable to reply, as Rimouski pulled into a tie for top spot in the league.

No. 2 star: Daniel Audette, Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)

Two Q games involved a team that squandered a four-goal lead recovering to win in extra time, with Audette (2G-2A, +3) surviving for a 6-5 shootout win over the Saint John Sea Dogs. Audette, a Montreal Canadiens fifth-round choice, had three points before the game was barely three minutes old. The 18-year-old centre fed Cameron Darcy (1G-2A, +3) for an early icebreaker, then stayed out and scored 13 seconds later on a setup from linemate and fellow Blainville, Que., native David Storto (1G-1A, +3).

The troika connected again through Storto on their next time out. Audette, who's sometimes drawn comparisons with current Habs forward Brendan Gallagher, also scored in the second period to stake the Phoenix to a 5-2 lead.

Saint John's Spencer Smallpan delivered both a last-minute tying goal and third-round shootout conversion, but the Phoenix won in the fourth when Kevin Domingue beat the Sea Dogs' Alex Bishop.

No. 3 star: Adam Tambellini, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

The New York Rangers draft choice contributed a hat trick during Calgary's 5-2 home win over the Regina Pats. The Hitmen were down 21-6 on the shot counter at one point, but rallied to support goalie Mack Shields (31 saves) with three unanswered goals in the second. Calgary Flames-drafted defenceman Keegan Kanzig's first goal since his trade to the Hitmen opened a lead and Tambellini (3G, +3) got in position to score goals 43 seconds apart later in the frame that opened a 4-1 lead. Connor Rankin (1G-2A, +3) had primary assists on each of Tambellilni's tallies and also scored a dagger goal with 8:37 remaining in the game.

Tambellini, who leads the Hitmen with 29 goals in 45 games, has two career WHL hat tricks,

Honourable mention: Loïk Léveillé, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)

Léveillé did some salvage work for the Eagles by scoring his second of the day at 4:12 of overtime for a 5-4 win over the Halifax Mooseheads, who had completeled a four-goal comeback when Timo Meier (3G, -1) got his hat trick goal with 13 seconds to play. With time dwindling in the 4-on-4 session and the Eagles facing the prospect of going to a shootout, Léveillé (2G, +3) scored off a feed from Maxim Lazarev, completing his first two-goal game in the QMJHL. The 18-year-old from St-Jérôme, Que., also scored in the first period and was not on the ice for a goal against.

Potent notables — Greg Chase (2G, +1) scored in overtime to lift Victoria to a 4-3 overtime win over Edmonton ... In the OHL, Detroit Red Wings prospect Zach Nastasiuk (2G, +2 in Owen Sound's 3-1 win at Mississauga had seven points over three games this week ... Oshawa Generals' Ken Appleby got his fifth shutout during a 1-0 win over the Barrie Colts in a tilt between the Eastern division leaders ... Tyler Hill (1G-1A, +2) scored his first goal for the Guelph Storm and had the overtime assist in a 4-3 win against the Kingston Frontenacs ... Multi-point days by Sam Studnicka (2G, +1), Nathan Todd (1G-1A, +1), Dante Salituro (2A) and Los Angeles Kings second-rounder Alex Lintuniemi (2A, +1) paced Ottawa to a 5-1 win against Peterborough that completed the 67's first perfect three-win weekend since 2011-12. The 67's were without captain Travis Konecny, who received an automatic two-game ban after a questionable slew-footing match penalty on Saturday ... In the QMJHL, Alexandre Goulet (1G-1A, +2) helped Charlottetown shade Quebec 3-2, also competing a 3-0-0-0 week.
