Ivan Telegin scores four for Barrie Colts; Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 Star: Ivan Telegin, Barrie Colts (OHL)

Ivan Telegin has been on a wicked tear for the Barrie Colts lately. In his last ten games, the Winnipeg Jets prospect is putting up Cy Young numbers: 16 goals, six assists. Tonight against Owen Sound it was more of the same, with the Russian putting up a season-high four goals, his third hat-trick on the season, in a 6-2 win for the Colts against the defending champion Attack.

Telegin kicked it off just 7:28 into the game with a shorthanded marker and gave a nice assist to Zach Hall for the 2-0 advantage just 5 minutes later. It was all downhill for the Colts from there. Good friend Brandon Sudeyko of In The O Radio notes that Telegin's recent scoring outburst has coincided with his girlfriend's arrival in Barrie.

No. 2 Star: Luke Judson, Belleville Bulls (OHL)

Belleville captain Luke Judson isn't particularly known for his scoring with just 33 points on the year coming into Wednesday night's game against Peterborough, but he hit his third goal of the night a little after the game was halfway over and assisted on Jordan Mayer's winning goal that came late in the third period.

Coach-GM George Burnett wasn't too thrilled about the leads routinely blown by the Bulls in this one, but the play by his captain in such an important game left him impressed. "When there is so much at stake and your captain plays the way Juddy did tonight, it says a lot about his character."

No. 3 Star: Stephane Legault, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

It was Kristians Pelss with the unassisted wrist shot through a maze of bodies to beat Moose Jaw in a game between the top two teams in the WHL's Eastern Conference, but it was Stephane Legault who had two in regulation, including a tying goal with 5:58 remaining in the third period on a broken play off a faceoff.

Oil Kings coach Derek Laxdal has to hope that this sparks Legault, who was a pretty reliable scorer at the start of the season but was held off the scoresheet for all of January and had just two goals in February. He now, however, rides a three-game point streak as we enter the most pivotal part of the season. In the four-point game, Edmonton increased their lead for the top seed in the East by seven points after Moose Jaw collected the Bettman point in the loss.

Honourable Mention: Nathan MacKinnon, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

Halifax didn't run into too much trouble against Acadie-Bathurst, who have exchanged losses and wins in the last seven, but ran into a strong Moosehead team with a hot Nathan MacKinnon, which is apparently a formula for giving up seven goals. MacKinnon had two goals and two assists, including five shots, all recorded as dangerous attempts, and going 12-7 from the face-off circle.

Honourable Mention: Austin Levi, Plymouth Whalers (OHL)

It turns out that Connor Crisp probably wasn't the reason the Erie Otters allowed 13 to Niagara. With Adam Wood in goal, they were still run up for double-digits on Wednesday, and while Plymouth's Austin Levi got into the act scoring a pair and also recording an assist, his +7, while I'm not huge on +/-, is indicative of something, and was far and away the best on his team. He was on for nine goals for and just two against.

Honourable Mention: Brandon Herrod, Kamloops Blazers (WHL)

Trailing 1-0 going into the third period against the strong Portland Winterhawks, Kamloops took over offensively, scoring five goals in quick succession to win 5-1. While the raucous near-capacity crowd applauded five different goal scorers, Herrod earned two points on the night, setting up a two-on-one with Brendan Ranford and Jordan DePape to make the score 3-1 and scored an empty-net goal for the Blazers' fourth, one which allowed the 5,693 fans to clog up a national fast-food outlet for an hour after the game for a free hamburger.

Honourable Mention: Jordon Cooke, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Kelowna were outshot 43-26 in this game, but Jordon Cooke stopped 41 saves in regulation time and two of three in the shootout to let the Rockets escape on the road with two points in a win over Spokane. Cooke, of course, you may remember as the goaltender who I've advocated in the past for Ryan Huska to start over Adam Brown due to his higher save percentage numbers, and he continues to improve, stopping 41 of 43 on the year to bring his season average to .915.

Potent Notables: The Quebec Remparts had quite the night, beating Drummondville 7-3. Anthony Duclair had two goals and three assists while coach Patrick's son Frederick Roy had a pair of goals and assists for himself... Petr Mrazek stopped 32 of 33 shots in Ottawa's 5-1 win over Kingston ... Another strong goaltending performance was on display in Prince Albert, with Andrey Makarov stopping all 34 shots he faced in a shutout win for Saskatoon ... Brandon's Mark Stone had three more assists on Wednesday, and he remains second in the WHL scoring race ... Medicine Hat's Emerson Etem scored his 56th on the season... Prince George goaltender Drew Owsley held off Seattle, stopping 31 of 32 pucks... WHL points leader Brendan Shinnimin had a quiet night, with just a single assist off Justin Feser's overtime winner for Tri-City in Vancouver.
