Brandon Wheat Kings’ John Quenneville has career night, in about 11 minutes: Friday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: John Quenneville, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

The 17-year-old Edmonton native had his most productive night of his year-plus junior, getting four of his five points during the middle frame to lead the Wheaties to an 8-4 divisional road win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Brandon came in on a three-game losing streak and went down 2-0 on a short-handed goal 84 seconds into the third period.

Quenneville (2G-3A, +3) stepped up by scoring on a one-timer during the remainder of the power play. Two minutes later, Quenneville swooped in like an avenging angel to steal the puck and fed fellow 17-year-old Jayce Hawryluk (2G-2A, +2) for the go-ahead goal. Moose Jaw took a penalty and Quenneville won a draw back to the point, leading to a goal by Calgary Flames-drafted D-man Eric Roy. Quenneville then scored again, giving him a career-high four points, all in a span of 10 minutes of 29 seconds. In the third period, Quenneville got the secondary helper when Tyler Coulter volleyed a puck out of the air for his first WHL goal to give Brandon a two-goal cushion.

No. 2 star: Raphaël Corriveau, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)

Last season, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles were on the receiving end of the Halifax Mooseheads' offensive pyrotechnics so often that they were too traumatized to watch the Canada Day fireworks on July 1. As Barney Stinson would say, "true story," which means it's completely apocryphal but serves a purpose. It establishes how sweet it was for Cape Breton to beat the mainlanders 4-3 and end Halifax's nine-game win streak, now doesn't it?

Corriveau (3G, +3) scored the Eagles' first three goals, ending a seven-game goal-less drought. The 19-year-old from St-Lévis, Que., scored twice in the first period to give Cape Breton, which is 10th overall in the Q after finishing dead last in 2012-13, an early shot of confidence. That made him the go-to guy after Halifax went ahead early in the third; Corriveau came through just 47 seconds later to tie the game 3-3. That set the stage for Cam Darcy to bag the winner.

No. 3 star: Alexander Delnov, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)

Delnov (2G-3A, +2), a 19-year-old Muscovite who competed in the Subway Super Series this week, can produce in bunches. He improved on his career high by one with a five-point effort to spur Seattle to a 6-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades.

The Russian's big night began with back-to-back power-play goals in the first period. After being the beneficiary of some sound Seattle puck movement, Delnov turned benefactor by earning three primary assists to help the T-Birds pull away. He assist on a Ryan Gropp tally late in the second, then got two helpers while Seattle was scoring three goals in fewer than four minutes to pull away in the mid-third.

Honourable mention: Oliver Bjorkstrand, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

Bjorkstrand (3G, +2) was first star after helping Portland double up host Spokane 6-3. The 18-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets third-rounder finished off a 2-on-1 rush to give Portland the lead for good at 2-1 after one. Bjorkstrand scored again during a third-period scramble and added an empty-netter, helping Portland improve to 5-0 vs. its U.S. Division rival. Mitch Holmberg scored all three Chiefs goals, giving him a WHL-leading 30 goals.

Honourable mention: Darby Llewellyn, Kitchener Rangers (OHL)

Llewellyn (2G, +2) might wish every day was Friday, even more so than the rest of us. The 17-year-old scored twice on the seven-day anniversary of his previous two-goal night, getting his second 2:55 into OT to give the Rangers a 4-3 win over Owen Sound. The victory helped Kitchener scoot up to 18th overall. The assist earners on Llewellyn's goals, Frank Hora, Brandon Robinson and Logan Schmidt, are all in their first season of NHL draft eligibility.
