Barrie Colts’ Alex Fotinos tops Saturday’s 3 stars with a 38-save shutout

No.1 star: Alex Fotinos, Barrie Colts (OHL)

Colts puck-stopper Alex Fotinos earned his first shutout of his major junior hockey career tonight in a 3-0 win over the Belleville Bulls. Fotinos' first perfect game was quite impressive. He not only turned away 38 shots, but he also outplayed top 2012 draft-prospect Malcolm Subban.

Fotinos had the kitchen sink thrown at him right off the bat by the Bulls. The 17-year-old faced 17 shots in the first period. He then had to turn away 12 shots in the second period to keep the game scoreless going into the final period. Fotinos finally received some help from his teammates in the third. Mark Scheifele scored just over half-way through the period. Ivan Telegin followed Schiefele's goal up with a short-handed marker roughly two minutes later. Daniel Erlich topped off the game with an empty-net goal in the final two minutes.

No. 2 star: Nicolas Petan, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

Seattle Thunderbirds goaltender Calvin Pickard will likely have nightmares of Petan tonight. The 5-foot-9, 153-pound centre scored on Pickard four times in the Winterhawks 11-3 shellacking over the T-Birds. Petan found the back of the net just 45 seconds into the game. He later scored two more goals in the second and added another in the third.

Petan's rookie season has been quite impressive. The 16-year-old has scored 16 goals and 34 points in 58 games this year. These stats place him 14th among WHL rookies. He seems to be on track to be one of the West's top prospects of the 2013 NHL draft.

No. 3 star: Brad Ross, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

Despite spending five minutes in the penalty box for a fighting-major, Ross still managed to score three goals plus a helper against the Thunderbirds. He notched his lone assist in the first, scored two goals in the second, and then completed his hat trick in the third. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect now has 42 goals and 82 points in 66 games this season. Not bad for a winger known for heavy hits and toe-to-toe tilts.

Honourable mention: Kent Simpson, Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Fotinos isn't the only goaltender to post a shutout tonight. Silvertips' Kent Simpson also played a perfect game in a 3-0 win over the Victoria Royals. He turned away 26 shots in his second shutout of the season.

This win is huge for the Silvertips. They leapfrogged the Royals in the standings for seventh place in the Western Conference with 51 points. Unless the Thunderbirds or Prince George Cougars go on a winning streak with their remaining games and the Silvertips lose their remaining four games, the Silvertips should still be around come playoff time.

Honourable mention: Tobias Rieder, Kitchener Rangers (OHL)

Rieder notched a four-point night in the Rangers' 6-4 win over the Erie Otters tonight. The Edmonton Oilers prospect got the ball rolling early for the Rangers. He assisted a Radek Faksa goal just 19 seconds into the game. He then went on to have a monster of a second period, scoring two goals and one assist.

Honourable mention: Radek Faksa, Kitchener Rangers (OHL)

Faksa also had a two-goal, two-assist night for the Rangers. The 18-year-old now has 28 goals and 63 points in 58 games on the year. His outstanding point production and strong play is making a strong case for him to be selected early on in this year's NHL entry draft.

Honourable mention: Brett Thompson, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Thompson proved tonight in a 4-0 win over the Owen Sound Attack that Nail Yakupov isn't the only Sarnia Sting who can come up big when it really matters. After a scoreless first period, the 21-year-old centre notched back-to-back goals in the second. He later added a helper on a Ryan Spooner power-play goal in the third.

Honourable mention: Graham Black, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Black's three-point performance helped the Broncos top the Prince Albert Raiders 6-3 tonight. The 19-year-old notched an even-strength goal in the first period to cut the Raiders' lead down 2-1. In the second he was tripped up while going hard to the net, so he was rewarded with a penalty shot. Black made no mistake on his glorious opportunity, firing it past Luke Lee-Knight. He later notched an apple on a Ryon Moser goal in the third.
