Habs prospect Jeremy Gregoire's hat trick helps Drakkar go up 2-0: Saturday's QMJHL & WHL 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jérémy Grégoire, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Grégoire (3G-2A, +4) left no doubt while taking a 2-0 lead home to Baie-Comeau, trouncing the Val-d'Or Foreurs 9-1. The Drakkar captain and Montreal Canadiens draft pick scored goals five minutes apart, including one just two minutes after the Foreurs, looking to overcome a double-overtime loss in the series opener, had opened the scoring.

Baie-Comeau, which lost out to Val-d'Or in last spring's playoffs, blew the game open by scoring five in the second. Grégoire completed his hat trick in that period and also assisted on veteran linemate Frédéric Gamelin's first goal of these playoffs.

No. 2 star: Maxime Fortier, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

The 17-year-old Fortier (2G-1A, +3) and the Mooseheads' complementary scorers took the burden off Nikolaj Ehlers during the 6-3 win over the Moncton Wildcats that opened a 2-0 lead in the league quarter-final. The Montrealer scored unassisted with 2:18 left in the first, giving Halifax a 2-0 lead after the opening period. Fortier's second was a response tally that re-opened a three-goal spread just past the game's midpoint. Mooseheads wing Vincent Watt (2G, +1) also scored his first two playoff goals.

No. 3 star: Tyson Baillie, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

It seems like Baillie often gets overlooked amid all the big names on the Rockets, but he scored the overtime winner and icebreaker during a 4-3 Kelowna win against the Victoria Royals that forged a 2-0 lead in the B.C. Division final. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., native nailed down the win just 58 seconds in on a setup from Edmonton Oilers top pick Leon Draisaitl (3A, +1), allaying fears of only getting a split of the home leg of the series. Baillie (2G, +1) also broke through for the only goal of the opening period, helping the Rockets build a lead before Calgary Flames signing Austin Carroll (3A, +1) got Victoria off the deck.

Honourable mention: Nikita Scherbak, Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Scherbak (2G, +2) had his most productive night of the playoffs, although the Silvertips lost 4-3 to the Portland Winterhawks in double OT to fall into a 1-1 tie in the U.S. Division final. Scherbak, who had tallied just once in the past seven games, scored twice in the second period. Adam Henry levelled with 9:42 left in the third and Oliver Bjorkstrand weaved into the slot and wired in a wrist shot for the decider 29 seconds into the second sudden-victory period.

Potent notables — Flames pick Eric Roy (2A) was first star as Brandon took a 2-0 lead over Regina in the WHL Eastern Division final ... In the QMJHL, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Frédérik Gauthier scored the third-period winner as top seed Rimouski beat Gatineau 3-1 to tie the series 1-1.
