2013 QMJHL draft: Brouillard moving to Gatineau highlight as 19 players change teams

Nineteen players changed addresses during the QMJHL entry draft held in Chicoutimi, Que., Saturday as teams began to understand a little more clearly what they have heading into next season.

The draft is one of three trading periods in the QMJHL season where the exchange of active players is allowed. 24 trades were two more than last season’s draft, and 19 players was seven more than 2012.

The biggest trade in terms of sheer volume was a trade between the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and the Gatineau Olympiques. The Titan acquired forwards Adam Chapman and Alexandros Soumakis and four draft picks: a first, sixth and seventh rounder in 2013, and a third round pick in 2015. The Olympiques received forward Marc-Olivier Brouillard and five picks: a first and fifth rounder this year, second rounders in 2014 and 2015 and a fifth round pick in 2015.

Chapman, 19, had 54 points, with 19 goals in 66 games for the Olympiques last season. He added two points in 10 games in the playoffs. Soumakis, 19, was injured most of the season, chipping in with a pair of assists in 11 games last year, and an assist in four games in the playoffs. Both players will provide solid offensive depth for the Titan next season.

Brouillard, 20, split the 2012-13 season with the Drummondville Voltigeurs and the Titan. He had 27 points in 27 games for the Titan after the trade, and had 39 points in 33 games with Drummondville. He had three points in four games in the playoffs. Brouillard is a good top-six forward who plays with a bit of an edge and a pest quality on the ice, who will be a fan favourite in Gatineau.

The other big trade Saturday was an all-Maritime affair. The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles sent forwards Zach Beaton and Sébastien Lemieux and a ninth round pick to the Charlottetown Islanders for overage goaltender Maxime Lagacé and an eighth round pick. Beaton, 18, and Lemieux, 17, appeared sparingly in the Cape Breton lineup last season.

Lagacé, 20, is a Dallas Stars free agent signee who spent his three-year QMJHL career with the P.E.I. Rocket. Lagacé went 13-12-1-0 last season splitting time with Antoine Bibeau in the Rocket net. In 56 games in 2011-12, Lagacé went 12-34-2-3 for the Rocket. He will anchor the Screaming Eagles net in 2013-14 with a strong veteran presence for their young squad.

Gatineau acquired the no. 9 and no. 10 picks in the first round from the Val-d’Or Foreurs for the no. 6 pick, and then the two teams combined for another deal, with the Olympiques shipping off picks no. 8 and no. 19 for center Vincent Dunn.

Dunn, 18, who played two seasons in Val-d’Or, finished last season with 52 points in 53 games, including 25 goals. He chipped in with three assists in 10 games in the post-season.

Val-d’Or was also moving picks quick, swapping no. 14 for no. 16 from Bathurst, and then sending no. 19 to Charlottetown for forward Louick Marcotte and a seventh round pick. Marcotte, 19, spent three seasons with the Rocket, and had 27 goals and 54 points in 63 games last season. He added two assists in six games in the playoffs.

Rouyn-Noranda traded out of the first round, sending no. 12 to Cape Breton for the first pick in the second round and a first round pick next year.

The Rimouski Oceanic traded center Jasmin Boutet to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in exchange for a fourth round pick. Boutet, 18, had six points in 58 games in the regular season and skated in five playoff games.

The Quebec Remparts spent their draft day swapping netminders. They traded Zachary Fortin to Rimouski for a fourth round pick, and then sent Gabriel Parent and a seventh round pick to the Sherbrooke Phoenix for Jack Flynn and two picks, including a fifth rounder. Fortin, 18, went 9-3-1-0 with two shutouts as François Brassard’s backup this season, and Parent, 17, appeared in one game as an emergency call-up when Fortin was injured. Flynn, 17, went 1-13-1-1 for the expansion Phoenix.

Sherbrooke then sent defenceman Brandon Nickerson, 17, to Cape Breton for left winger Cole Murphy. Murphy, 18, had six points in 46 games last season.

The Halifax Mooseheads got into the act, sending forwards Dominic Beauchemin and Joël Bouchard to Bathurst for a fifth round pick. Beauchemin, 20, had 34 points in 60 games for the Mooseheads last season, and had a goal and an assist in 16 playoff games. Blanchard, 19, suited up for three games for Halifax in 2011-12.

The Shawinigan Cataractes sent defenceman Phil Pietroniro to Rouyn-Noranda or an eighth round pick in 2014. Pietroniro, 19, had 11 points in 41 games for the Cataractes.

Val-d’Or sent defenceman Julien Leduc to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada for a third round pick in 2014. Leduc, 18, played three seasons in for the Foreurs, and had 17 points in 46 games last season.

Sherbrooke sent a ninth round pick and Gatineau’s fourth round selection in 2014 to Rimouski for Jean-François Plante. Plante, 19, split his three seasons in the QMJHL between Rimouski and Shawinigan. Last season he had 33 points in 54 games. In the 2012 playoffs, he had 13 points in 21 games.
