Diver Emilie Heymans fails to make splash in final Olympic event

It wasn't the way Emilie Heymans wanted to say goodbye, but she has no regrets.

Heymans finished 12th in the individual three-metre springboard Sunday at the London Games. The St. Lambert, Que., native confirmed she will almost certainly not return for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

"I think I will feel it more when I go home,'' Heymans, 30, told the Toronto Sun. "Now I think I'm going to stick around and enjoy the Games. It will be the first time that I'll be able to really enjoy it because usually I always competed at the end.''

Teammate Jennifer Abel finished sixth in the springboard.

Heymans and Abel won bronze in the three-metre synchronized last week to become the first Canadians to win medals in London. Heymans became the first female diver to win medals at four consecutive Olympics.

"It's been great from the beginning," she said. "I think getting my fourth medal here in four Olympics was awesome.''

Abel, of Laval, Que., praised Heymans.

"I remember at the beginning of the year I didn't qualify for the World Cup here and I was crying (and) I was down,'' said the 20-year-old. "I just looked at her and I saw that it's never the end. And that's the reason why I wanted to come here and be strong.

"She showed me even if there's a bad moment, there's always a happy ending."

China's Wu Minxia won the gold to write some Olympic history of her own. The 26-year-old tied the record for the most diving medals in history with six.

Wu closed out the competition with a flourish. She earned the only perfect 10 of the competition from one of the judges on her last dive.

He Zi, who won gold with Wu in the synchro, finished second while Mexico's Laura Sanchez Soto took bronze.

Abel came into the competition considered a medal contender after winning a bronze in springboard at the world championships.
