Canada will meet China in semi-final men’s curling at the Sochi Olympics
Canada will meet China in one semi-final in men's curling at the Winter Olympics, in Sochi.
While not all of the playoff positions have been set, it is known that Brad Jacobs' Northern Ontario team will meet Rui Liu's Chinese squad, coached by Canadian Marcel Rocque.
Rocque, a four time Brier and three time world champion from his days playing with Alberta's Randy Ferbey rink, has been credited with great improvements in the Chinese men's performance.
"We geared up all year for this," Rocque told the CBC moments after his team had defeated Great Britain, 6 - 5. "I'm just happy they get an opportunity to play that (semi-final) game."
Jacobs and Liu each skipped their teams to 7 and 2 records, with Canada winning it's last 6 games in succession, including a 9-8, extra end, victory over Liu on Sunday.
"Any time you can compete and run with the might maple leaf, you're playing well," said Rocque of China's close-as-a-shave loss to Canada in the round robin. "If they can do the same thing (in the semi), maybe they have as good a chance as anyone."
Make no mistake, Canada will have a tough one on its hands in this semi. Liu has been spot on most of the week, including covering the pin 8 straight times in the draw to the button contest that decided who had hammer before each round robin game. Jacobs showed great touch, himself, in that win over China. He drew the button against two Chinese stones in the eleventh end in order to secure the victory.
On Monday, Liu's final end draw to the four foot powered his team to a win over Great Britain, ensuring that there will be a tiebreaker for fourth spot, between Great Britain and Norway.
The winner of that game will play first place Sweden in the other semi-final.
Both semi-finals will be played on Wednesday, at 10 am Eastern time.
