Three Stars: Travis Lulay, Solomon Elimimian and Mike Renaud lead the way in Week Six
Welcome back to our weekly Three Stars feature. Thanks to a week with only two games, it's a little easier than normal for players to crack this list, but there were still plenty of impressive showings. Here's a look at Week Six's top offensive, defensive, special teams and Canadian players.
First star/offensive player of the week: Travis Lulay, quarterback, B.C. Lions: Lulay went into Monday's game with a history of struggles against the Blue Bombers, but he overcame that quite nicely to lead B.C. to a 27-20 win. He completed 28 of his 39 passing attempts (71.8 per cent) for 268 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and rushing twice for 13 further yards. He did fumble once, but other than that, had a pretty remarkable day. He also made some dazzling throws, including one into tight coverage for a Courtney Taylor touchdown. If he can maintain that kind of efficiency, the Lions' offence should kick into high gear sooner rather than later.
(Honourable mentions: Mike Reilly, QB, Edmonton; Cary Koch, WR, Edmonton; Henry Burris, QB, Hamilton.)
Second star/defensive player of the week: Solomon Elimimian, linebacker, B.C. Lions: Elimimian was a key part of the B.C. defence's impressive performance Monday. He made a big impact early on on special teams, forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff, and then stepped it up on defence, making a crucial interception in the second quarter that set up a Korey Williams touchdown and gave the Lions a 17-9 lead. Elimimian finished the day with three defensive tackles, a special teams tackle, a forced fumble and an interception, and he played well in coverage too, helping to hold Winnipeg quarterback Justin Goltz to just 112 passing yards with a 48.1 per cent completion mark. He's become a critical part of the B.C. defence since returning from the NFL midway through last season and moving to the outside to let Adam Bighill hold things down in the middle of the linebacking corps.
(Honourable mentions: Alex Hall, DE, Winnipeg; Adam Bighill, LB, B.C.; Arthur Hobbs, DB, Hamilton.)
Third star/special teams player of the week: Mike Renaud, punter, Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Renaud's side came up short Monday against B.C., but he did his job very well, hitting eight punts a total of 410 yards, an average of 51.3 per punt. Renaud leads all CFL punters with an average of 45.4 yards per punt this year, and that's impressive, as the struggling Bombers' offence has forced him to punt 50 times, more than anyone else. His leg is holding up well so far.
(Honourable mentions: Josh Bartel, P, Hamilton; Luca Congi, K, Hamilton; Aaron Woods, PR/KR, Winnipeg.)
Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Sam Giguere, WR, Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Giguere led all Hamilton receivers in both yards (90) and catches (six) in the Ticats' wild 30-29 win over Edmonton Friday. With other big names, including Andy Fantuz, out thanks to injury, Giguere stepped up in a big way. He showed off some of the potential that made him a first-round selection in the 2008 CFL draft and let him spend five years in the NFL (mostly on practice rosters, though) with the New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts. If he keeps playing like this, he'll be a key piece for Hamilton's offence this year.
(Honourable mentions: Mike Renaud, P, Winnipeg; Shawn Gore, SB, B.C.; Luca Congi, K, Hamilton.)
