Three Stars: Marc-Olivier Brouillette, Maurice Price and Grant Shaw top Week 10 performances
It's time for another entry in our Three Stars series, this time looking at the best showings from offensive, defensive, special teams and Canadian players in Week 10.
First star/defensive player of the week: Marc-Olivier Brouillette, linebacker, Montreal Alouettes: Quarterback Tanner Marsh received many of the headlines following Montreal's 20-9 upset of the Toronto Argonauts Tuesday night, and deservedly so, but Brouillette's contributions may have been even more important. He filled in for injured star Kyries Hebert at the weak-side linebacker slot for the second straight week Tuesday and made the play of the game, hitting Toronto quarterback Zach Collaros and forcing a fumble that fellow Canadian linebacker Shea Emry picked up and returned for a touchdown. That put the Alouettes up 17-8 shortly before halftime and paved the way for their dominant second half. Brouillette, a former CIS quarterback with the Université de Montréal Carabins, has been an excellent player for the Alouettes since 2010, overcoming remarkable adversity (including a leg-threatening infection) along the way, but he's mostly shone on special teams and as a versatile defensive fill-in. If he keeps playing the way he did Tuesday, though, where he had six tackles and a team-high two sacks to go with his crucial forced fumble, it may be difficult to take him out of the lineup.
(Honourable mentions: Charleston Hughes, DE, Calgary; Henoc Muamba, LB, Winnipeg; Damaso Munoz, LB, Edmonton.)
Second star/offensive player of the week: Maurice Price, wide receiver, Calgary Stampeders: The Stampeders may have barely held on for a 37-34 win over Edmonton in a wild Labour Day Classic, but Price was a large part of the reason why they did. The Charleston Southern University (Division I FCS) product had five catches for a game-high 165 yards and an astounding three touchdowns Sunday, and he made numerous impressive grabs. He's been a tremendous player for the Stampeders over the last three years and has taken on even further importance this season with Nik Lewis out. He may be key to their offensive success for the rest of the year.
(Honourable mentions: Travis Lulay, QB, B.C.; S.J. Green, WR, Montreal; Kory Sheets, RB, Saskatchewan.)
Third star/special teams player of the week: Grant Shaw, punter, Edmonton Eskimos: Shaw's leg got a workout in Monday's game, especially during the first three quarters where the Eskimos' offence struggled, but he was effective throughout. He averaged 50.5 yards per punt on 10 punts, including a particularly long 63-yard one, and he helped keep Calgary's returns reasonably limited (on nine returnable punts, returners Larry Taylor and Marquay McDaniel averaged 10.3 yards per return, and primary returner Taylor averaged only 8.1 yards on seven punt returns. The Eskimos' defence didn't always support him, but Shaw put them in positions to succeed all night long and helped to pave the way for Edmonton's almost-comeback.
(Honourable mentions: Rene Paredes, K, Calgary; Aaron Woods, PR/KR, Winnipeg; Joe Burnett, PR/KR, Edmonton.)
Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Marc-Olivier Brouillette, linebacker, Montreal Alouettes: Yes, as first star, Brouillette easily takes this one, but it's worthwhile reflecting on how much he's overcome to get to this point. Not only switching positions out of college but switching from offence to defence is highly unusual (although it does occasionally happen), and Brouillette has completely shifted his focus from throwing passes to making tackles, both on special teams and on defence. He hasn't always been able to start given the Alouettes' depth at linebacker, but he's impressed with every chance he's received. Expect more from him in the near future.
(Honourable mentions: Henoc Muamba, LB, Winnipeg; Chris Getzlaf, WR, Saskatchewan; Grant Shaw, P, Edmonton.)
