Three Stars: Bryant Turner, Hugh Charles, Noel Prefontaine and Andrew Harris shine in Week Two

Our Three Stars series continues with a look at the best offensive, defensive, special teams and Canadian players from Week Two's slate of games.

First star/top defensive player: Bryant Turner, defensive tackle, Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Winnipeg's 19-11 win over Montreal Thursday was driven by their businesslike defence, and it was Turner in particular who kicked their efforts into overdrive. The Bombers sacked Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo seven times on the night, with Turner notching three of those sacks and adding a fumble recovery while also impressing against the run, a remarkable showing for an interior lineman. That last sack was particularly impressive, and famed former Bombers' defensive tackle Doug Brown had high praise for it in his Winnipeg Free Press column: it came from Turner fooling Montreal veteran guard Scott Flory by faking a stunt that never came. Turner ran into breathing problems in the last minute of the game and was kept overnight in Montreal for observation before negative tests revealed the problem came just from strained ligaments. He is questionable for the team's next game against Hamilton Saturday, though, and if he can't go, the Bombers are sure to miss his presence in the middle.

(Honourable mentions: Kyries Hebert, S, Montreal; Shawn Lemon, DE, Calgary; T.J. Hill, LB, Edmonton.)

Second star/top offensive player: Hugh Charles, running back, Edmonton Eskimos: Edmonton's 30-20 win over Hamilton wasn't always pretty, coming as it did in the torrential rain in Guelph, but it was effective, and Charles was a key reason why they came away with the victory. He ran 11 times for 119 yards and a touchdown (10.8 yards per carry), including a spectacular 70-yardscamper, and added 27 yards and another touchdown on three catches, also contributing 59 yards on two kickoff returns. Like the Eskimos' day, Charles' performance wasn't perfect, as he fumbled the initial kickoff right back to Hamilton. He overcame that poor start to shine even in the midst of the downpour, though.

(Honourable mentions: Kory Sheets, RB, Saskatchewan; Andrew Harris, RB, B.C.; Cory Watson, SB, Winnipeg.)

Third star/top special teams player: Noel Prefontaine, punter/kicker, Toronto Argonauts: Thursday's loss to B.C. marked the second week in a row that the Argonauts received unexpectedly good production in the kicking game. Last week, starting P/K Swayze Waters injured himself partway through the game and they didn't have a backup dressed, but positional players Spencer Watt, Alexander Robinson and Dontrelle Inman stepped up surprisingly well. This week, the Argos were able to activate the veteran Prefontaine from the practice roster, but there were questions about how effective the 39-year-old would be, as he only rejoined the team near the end of June. Prefontaine filled in perfectly for Waters, though, hitting all three of his field-goal attempts and averaging 44.1 yards on eight punts. That's a very good show, and one that helped the Argonauts do acceptably without Waters.

(Honourable mentions: Jock Sanders, PR/KR, Saskatchewan; Mike Renaud, P, Winnipeg; Rob Maver, P, Calgary.)

Bonus star/top Canadian player: Andrew Harris, running back, B.C. Lions: Harris' production on the ground and through the air was crucial to B.C.'s 24-16 win over Toronto Thursday. He picked up 103 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries (6.9 yards per carry), while adding 49 further receiving yards on six catches and contributing as a blocker. It was a great all-around effort, one that helped carry the Lions to their first victory of the year.

(Honourable mentions: Cory Watson, SB, Winnipeg; Noel Prefontaine, P/K, Toronto; Mike Renaud, P, Winnipeg.)
