Three Stars: Macho Harris, Marquay McDaniel and Chad Owens lead Week Fourteen

Here's the next edition of the Three Stars, our regular look at each week's top performers on offence, defence and special teams. This time around, we're selecting the top showings from Week Fourteen's games.

First star/defensive player of the week: Macho Harris, linebacker, Saskatchewan Roughriders: Harris was a crucial part of the Roughriders' second win of the season, a 33-21 home victory against the Montreal Alouettes Sunday. He had three interceptions, including one that he returned 50 yards for a touchdown, and told Jonathan Hamelin of The Canadian Press that it was a historic game for him:

"I've never had three interceptions in a game and the last time I had a touchdown was back in my senior year at Virgina Tech," said Harris, who only had one career interception in the CFL prior to Sunday.

So, Harris was an unlikely pick to quadruple his interception total Sunday. He's been highly effective in other areas over his four years in the CFL (all with Saskatchewan), though, starting as a special teams player and working himself up to a regular role over the last couple of seasons. He had 61 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery last year, and is in even better shape this year with 42 tackles, four sacks, the three interceptions and another fumble recovery. If he can keep playing the way he did against the Alouettes, he may be able to help the Riders further improve on their 2-11 record down the stretch.

(Honourable mentions: Willie Jefferson, DE, Edmonton; Adam Bighill, LB, B.C.; Deron Mayo, LB, Calgary.)

Second star/offensive player of the week: Marquay McDaniel, slotback, Calgary Stampeders: McDaniel was superb in Calgary's narrow 25-23 win over Winnipeg Friday, catching nine passes for a week-high 159 receiving yards. That's an impressive average of 17.7 yards per catch, and it's not inflated by one particularly big play, as his longest reception on the day was for 33 yards. The Hampton product is in his seventh year in the CFL and has been a key figure for Calgary since joining the Stampeders in 2012, and he's on course for another really good year. He's currently third in the league with 815 receiving yards, and he should have an excellent chance to cross the 1,000-yard mark for the second time in his career.

(Honourable mentions: Jerome Messam, RB, Saskatchewan; Derel Walker, WR, Edmonton; Bo Levi Mitchell, QB, Calgary.)

Third star/special teams player of the week: Chad Owens, punt returner, Toronto Argonauts: This season's seen Owens post less receiving stats than what we've typically seen from him thanks to the emergence of a talented trio of younger receivers in Toronto, but he's still found ways to make an impact, and he did just that in the Argonauts' 35-26 win over Ottawa Saturday. Owens took a punt back 87 yards for a touchdown in that game's seventh minute, giving Toronto a 14-0 lead they would never relinquish. The Hawaii product finished the day with six punt returns for 135 yards, plus two catches for 33 yards, and he also gave Yahoo's Neate Sager a memorable quote about the Argonauts' stadium and scheduling woes, which will see them play a "home" game in Ottawa next week. Here's what Owens said:

"It doesn't matter where we play. We'll play outside in the street. If the game matters in the standings, we got to go out there and win. We can make excuses but that will get you nowhere. Press forward and get the job done."

If Owens can keep that attitude and keep returning punts this way, good times may be ahead for the Boatmen. Maybe they'll even go full Bound For Street, as Jon Bois predicted.

(Honourable mentions: Rene Paredes, K, Calgary; Graig Newman, DB, Winnipeg; Rob Maver, P, Calgary.)

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Jerome Messam, running back, Saskatchewan Roughriders: Messam was the biggest offensive star in Saskatchewan's 33-21 win over Montreal Sunday, picking up 111 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries. That's a remarkable average of 7.4 yards per carry. Messam was also effective as a pass-blocker, and he had a solid all-around game. one of many he's had this year. The Graceland product leads the league with 776 rushing yards to date, and he also has a 6.4 yards per carry average, two rushing touchdowns and 39 catches for 385 yards. He'll be a key part of the Riders' plans down the stretch.

(Honourable mentions: Jamaal Westerman, DE, Winnipeg; Marc-Olivier Brouillette, DB, Montreal; Rob Bagg, SB, Saskatchewan.)
