Stampeders announce they’re going back to Drew Tate despite Bo Levi Mitchell’s performance

If you deliver arguably the top quarterbacking performance of this CFL season thus far in your first-ever start, earning a First Star nod and a player of the week award along the way, what do you do for an encore? If you're Calgary Stampeders' quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, the answer is apparently "Find a nice seat on the bench." Calgary head coach/general manager John Hufnagel announced Sunday that the team will name Drew Tate as their starter again for Friday's game against Saskatchewan, meaning that the reigning player of the week will be riding the pine. From CFL.ca:

Of the most important topics head coach John Hufnagel covered after practice was the confirmation that all three of his quarterbacks were healthy and that Drew Tate will reclaim his position under centre when the Stampeders host the Roughriders on Friday night.

“All three quarterbacks threw the ball and they’re all ready to play. That’s something we haven’t had for a few weeks. It puts you back in the comfort position where you can call on any one of the three. You know how physical the game is,” said Hufnagel.

“Drew was able to play in the last game; he just wasn’t going to be at 100 per cent. Fortunately, (Bo Levi Mitchell) stepped up as a lot of young players have done for this football team and played football in a winning fashion,” he added. ...

Despite his strong play, Hufnagel remained adamant that his mentality regarding his quarterbacks remains unchanged. By that logic, Tate is number one, while Kevin Glenn and Mitchell slot in at the two and three spots respectively.

“Why would my mindset change (based) on the action of one game versus another guy who got us to the Grey Cup last year? I’ll play the quarterback until I believe a change is needed. Whoever that is and whenever that is, that’s up to me to figure out during game day,” said Hufnagel.

Hufnagel has a point there, as one game is by definition an extremely small sample size. Still, it's interesting that a much-less-spectacular one-game performance from the quarterback Mitchell and the Stampeders beat (Winnipeg's Justin Goltz, who was also making his first start) was enough for the Bombers to elevate him over the injured Buck Pierce going forward. Goltz threw for just 194 yards and two touchdowns with an interception and a 54.3 per cent completion mark, but earned a starting job, while Mitchell passed for 376 yards with an 87.9 per cent completion mark, three touchdowns and no interceptions, but remains a number-three quarterback in Calgary for the moment.

The Stampeders and Bombers are in different situations, of course, thanks to their mirror image 4-1 and 1-4 records; Calgary's obviously going for it all this year, while Winnipeg's likely pondering the future a bit more. Thus, this isn't an illogical move from Hufnagel, especially when you consider Tate's impressive play when healthy and Glenn's solid performances as a backup. The Stampeders should see if they can use Mitchell more in some form this year, though. Given that there's an expansion draft for the new Ottawa franchise after this year and that teams will only be able to protect one quarterback, Calgary has to decide by then if Mitchell's worth keeping over Tate and Glenn.

Sure, Mitchell has way less experience, but he's also 23 (versus 28 and 34 respectively), and he doesn't have anywhere near Tate's list of problematic injury issues. He also couldn't have delivered much more of a perfect game in his one chance to start this year. It's understandable that the Stampeders are going back to Tate for now, especially against the dominant 5-0 Roughriders, as he'd seem to perhaps give them the best chance to win at this given moment. Before the end of the year, though, they'll have to give Mitchell some more time to see if his performance was just a flash in the pan or something more sustainable. In order to do that, they can't keep him as their third-stringer forever...
