Player Notes
Rangers baserunning instructor Gary Pettis said Thursday that the club has "encouraged" Alex Rios to run more.

Advice: "We've encouraged him to run," said Pettis. "He's always been a very good baserunner. It's one of many things he does very well." Rios surprised with 42 stolen bases last season and has swiped 18 bags in 19 attempts since joining the Rangers last August. He's picked up a pair of thefts this year (without being caught) even though he's had just seven opportunities to run. While Rios still seems likely to fall short of last year's stolen base total, he might not come up as shy as most have assumed.

Alex Rios added two more hits over five at-bats, helping the Rangers defeat the Red Sox 10-7 on Tuesday.

Advice: Both hits were singles and he scored a run in the process. Rios has been seeing the ball well, batting .387 through eight games. If the Rangers are fortunate, Rios will return to the 20-homer club while continuing to swipe bases at a high frequency. The 33-year-old swiped 42 of them last season.
