MILAN — Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Spezia but still extended its lead at the top of the Serie A table on Wednesday. Ivan Perišic cancelled out Diego Farias’ opener for Spezia as Inter moved 10 points above second-place AC Milan after the Rossoneri lost 2-1 at home to Sassuolo. Juventus came from behind to win 3-1 against Parma to move into third ahead of Atalanta's match at Roma on Thursday. Spezia remained five points above the relegation zone. Inter was one of the three Italian clubs involved in the attempt to launch a Super League. Along with Juventus and Milan, the Nerazzurri abandoned the project on Wednesday. Inter had seen its 11-match winning run come to an end with a draw at Napoli on Sunday but knew it could move 12 points clear after Milan’s loss. But it was Spezia which took a surprise lead in the 12th minute when Farias’ snapshot went under Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. It was another howler from the veteran, just three days after an own goal against Napoli. Inter piled on the pressure and it paid off six minutes from halftime when Achraf Hakimi rolled a ball across from the right and Perišic poked it in at the far post. Inter forward Lautaro Martínez hit the post twice in the second half while the Nerazzurri also had two goals ruled out for offside late on. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RACE Substitute Giacomo Raspadori scored twice in the final 14 minutes for Sassuolo to damage Milan’s chances of holding onto a Champions League spot. Second-place Milan was firmly in the title race at the start of the year but is now looking nervously over its shoulder. Atalanta could move a point above Milan if it beats Roma. Fifth-place Napoli also plays Thursday and can close the gap to three points with a win at home to Lazio. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was out injured but Milan scored the opener in the 30th minute when Hakan Çalhanoglu curled into the top right corner. Both teams had chances before Sassuolo turned the match on its head. Raspadori passed to Jeremy Toljan on the right side of the area and his shot was deflected back into the path of his teammate, who turned it in at full stretch. Raspadori doubled his tally seven minutes later with a low, angled shot which went in off the left post. Juventus moved just a point behind Milan but was forced to come from behind after Gastón Brugman's sublime free-kick gave relegation-threatened Parma the lead in the 25th. Alex Sandro put Juventus in front with a goal either side of the interval and Matthijs de Ligt sealed the result in the 68th. RELEGATION BATTLE Cagliari inched closer to safety after winning 1-0 at Udinese. The Sardinian side moved to within three points of 17th-place Benevento, which drew 2-2 at fellow struggler Genoa. Torino also slipped to just three points above the drop after a 1-1 draw at Bologna. Bottom club Crotone lost 1-0 at home to Sampdoria. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Daniella Matar, The Associated Press
MIAMI — The Baltimore Orioles were eager to swing, and Trevor Rogers was happy to let them. Early contact helped Rogers pitch a career-high seven innings without allowing a runner past second base, and the Miami Marlins earned a split of the two-game series by winning 3-0 Wednesday. Rogers needed only seven pitches in the first inning and eight in the sixth. He recorded five first-pitch outs. “Trying to get strike one early played right into them being aggressive,” the left-hander said. “I attacked them with quality pitches and got some early contact. All of my pitches were working, and overall it was a good day." Rogers (2-1) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight, and lowered his ERA to 1.64 as he gained his third career win in his 11th start. The other two victories came against two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. “He’s a left-hander that throws from a tough angle," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "The ball jumps out of his hand. He was attacking the strike zone on us, and you saw a lot of early outs. He had really good stuff today, and we knew that coming in.” Rogers threw 82 pitches to become the first Miami starter to go seven innings. He has both of the rotation's victories after posting a 6.11 ERA in seven starts in 2020. “This is a guy who really benefited from coming up last year and getting a few starts,” manager Don Mattingly said. “He really learned his lessons, and went to work and made some big strides. He has been very mature about the way he goes about it. And this guy’s stuff is really good.” Yimi García completed the four-hitter by pitching a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances. The last nine Orioles went down in order. Jesús Aguilar broke a 0-0 tie with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to knock out Bruce Zimmermann (1-2), who allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings. Miami catcher Sandy León gave the offence a spark with two hits and went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the first run on Aguilar's double. León was called up before the game to make his season debut. Adam Duvall drove in Miami's other run with a single and ranks among the NL leaders with 14 RBIs. The Orioles were shut out for the third time. They fell to 3-14 in Miami. AN EXTRA BAG When Baltimore third baseman Maikel Franco changed to field a sacrifice bunt, the 235-pound León kept motoring around second and beat three Orioles to third. “That’s heads-up baserunning there,” Mattingly said. “That should be a pretty good video — four guys chasing him across the field.” “I'm not that fast,” León said with a grin. “I saw no one was at third and I took my chance.” Zimmermann said he should have covered third. Hyde said it was catcher Pedro Severino's responsibility. TRAINER’S ROOM Marlins: 3B Brian Anderson (side) and 1B-OF Garrett Cooper (groin) sat out. THE NL EAST Marlins general manager Kim Ng said her team's division is baseball's best, and not just because of the Atlanta Braves. “I'm not sure there is going to be a clear runaway winner of this thing, because the quality of the entire division from top to bottom is very good,” Ng said. “That means we’re all going to beat up on each other all year long.” ROSTER MOVES Before the game, the Marlins placed C Jorge Alfaro (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list, and selected León's contract from the alternate training site. They optioned RHP Nick Neidert to the alternate training site. UP NEXT Orioles: They begin a homestand Friday when RHP Jorge López (1-2, 8.56) starts against Oakland. Marlins: LHP Daniel Castano (0-0, 1.80) is scheduled to start Thursday to begin a four-game series at San Francisco. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports ___ Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Steve_Wine Steven Wine, The Associated Press
Despite heated social media discussion in Canada, talks between the CFL and XFL haven't addressed what rules could be implemented if the football leagues join forces. The CFL and XFL announced jointly March 10 they were entering serious discussions about a potential partnership. The two sides stated they'd agreed to collaborate on how they could possibly grow football together. The announcement prompted many fans in Canada to voice concerns on social media about how a partnership could negatively impact the Canadian game. CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie said Wednesday talks with the XFL have dealt with the financial logistics of a partnership and how they might work and not about such things as rules or field size. "Right now, it's trying to understand how working together could lead to a better outcome for both leagues," Ambrosie said. "There's a lot of heavy lifting that has to be done to try to understand what the possibilities are. "Right now we're trying to understand what the opportunity could look like. That work continues but it's being done in a very positive way." News of the CFL/XFL talks made headlines across North America.. Actor Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, who spent time on the Calgary Stampeders' practice roster in 1995, is an XFL co-owner. Johnson, also a former wrestler, purchased the American-based league last year with business partner Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital Partners for US$15 million. The XFL was expected to resume play next spring after shutting down in 2020 under a different ownership group, but those plans are on hold during its talks with the CFL. "The bottom line for me is that talking with them just reinforces these are truly world-class people," Ambrosie said. "It's been a real passionate exploration of what we might do to improve the business for everybody and if we can do that, who knows? "There's almost an infinite possibility of good outcomes but it's got to start with making sure we can improve our business model so it matches the quality of the game itself." Ambrosie wouldn't divulge exactly what has been discussed. But he did say there's been no talk about the XFL providing the CFL with money it could use to resume play this season after cancelling plans for an abbreviated 2020 campaign last August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CFL announced Wednesday it was pushing back the start of the '21 campaign from June 10 to Aug. 5 and reducing its 18-game schedule to 14 because of the novel coronavirus outbreak. "We are fundamentally addressing the business of our league and that's what in large part what this opportunity (with the XFL) is all about," Ambrosie said. "It's understanding if there's a way to improve our business model . . . so we can have a business that's as strong as the game and players themselves. "Our game and players have always been stronger than the business of our league. You start with the business first, then you work backwards from there." The CFL has spoken to the XFL predominantly on its own. Brian Ramsay, the executive director of the CFL Players' Association, said the union hasn't been involved because its priority remains getting its members back playing football. "That's been the focus of our talks with the league," he said. Ambrosie said neither the CFL nor the XFL have set deadlines regarding how long they'll continue talking. "There's a real commitment to work together to see what's in the realm of possibility," Ambrosie said. "You must investigate all potential opportunities then put that all together and I think that will guide us to what is in the realm of possibilities. "I think there is, without a doubt, a sense of urgency to try and advance our discussions." This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 21, 2021. Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press
