STORY: Qatar unveiled the 2022 FIFA World Cup emblem on Tuesday (September 3) with the logo being projected on to various landmarks in Doha as well as around the world.

The emblem was revealed to the public at 20:22 local time (1722 GMT). The logo resembles the shape of a loop inspired by the traditional woollen shawl usually worn during winter months in the Arab and Gulf region, according to organisers. It also echoes the number eight, which refers to the eight stadiums that will host the 2022 tournament.

At the Katara Cultural Village amphitheatre, onlookers expressed their excitement with the launch marking one more step to the first World Cup to be staged in the Middle East, which begins in just over three years.

The emblem was also projected on to Doha Tower, Souq Waqif, Al Zubarah Fort and Ministry of Interior building.

At the same time the logo was officially launched on screens in various cities around the world including in New York City, Moscow and Santiago.

The opening match of the Qatar World Cup will be on November 21, 2022 with Doha hosting the final on December 18.
