Portugal’s ‘worst week’ for wildfire damage

Portugal has been battling wildfires for more than a week. Mainland Entire villages have been surrounded by flames, more than 4,000 firefighters and 30 aircraft have been deployed to extinguish more than one hundred separate fires across the mainland. Madeira Drone footage shows the charred ruins on the island of Madeira. Three people were killed and more than 200 buildings were damaged or destroyed after wildfires broke out. Hundreds were evacuated, some had watched their homes burn to the ground. “We lost our house on Tuesday night,” explained Vitor at a temporary shelter, “now we`re here waiting to find out if we’re going to be relocated, or not.” Police believe the fires may have been deliberately started by arsonists.
