The Purdue forward spoke with Yahoo Sports NBA draft analyst Krysten Peek at the Barclays Center after being selected 5th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.
KRYSTEN PEEK: I'm Krysten Peek, NBA Draft analyst, here with the number 5 pick in the draft, Jaden Ivey, heading to Detroit. Jaden, we spoke earlier this week. You said you were on a roller coaster of emotion. You didn't know what was going to happen. How did it feel to finally just exhale and know where you're going?
JADEN IVEY: It felt great. I just was overthrown with emotions. I was just so happy to be a Piston. Just my background, my family, my mom being with the Detroit Shock, my grandparents living out there. My grandpa played for the Detroit Lions. My dad's from there. So I have family ties. And when you get to go home and play, it just brings a certain passion in it.
KRYSTEN PEEK: Were you worried at all, going into today, that Sacramento would maybe take you at 4?
JADEN IVEY: I wasn't at all. I feel like I was just anxious to see where I was going to go. Whatever God had planned for me, I was just going to stick with it. And my grandpa's up in heaven smiling right now. I can't thank him enough for what he's done for me to get me to this point, even though he's in heaven. And I'm really blessed to be a Piston.
KRYSTEN PEEK: What was that workout like? Did they bring anybody else in? I know you said it was a one-on-zero. But were you able to meet any of your future teammates with when you spent time with them?
JADEN IVEY: When I was down there, I don't think Cade and them were down there. I met Carson, [? though, ?] obviously just with the team. And I'm looking forward to getting down there and talking to them.
KRYSTEN PEEK: I mean, I'm sure Detroit fans are thrilled. You've got Cade Cunningham, who's an amazing facilitator with the ball in his hands. You've got [? you ?] on the wing, who has a crazy first step, loves to finish at the rim. What are you most looking forward to playing alongside Cade in the backcourt?
JADEN IVEY: I'm just looking forward to having fun with him. I know that all those guys want to win. And I'm looking forward to getting Detroit back on the winning side. So I'm just going to do whatever I can to just help the team win.
KRYSTEN PEEK: Is it more satisfying for you as a player to go into a situation where you have to build from the ground up, and you're not necessarily going to a team that's already established?
JADEN IVEY: Yeah. It means that we have more work to do, and I have more work to do We're just going to keep pushing each day. And our main goal is to win a championship. So you've got to start by-- you've got to have good habits. And each day, we've just got to keep working towards that goal.
KRYSTEN PEEK: Summer League is right around the corner. I mean, we talked about-- you thought that you should have been in the conversation as the best player in this Draft class. What are you going to show at Summer League to prove that point? Those guys were all bigs. You were the first guard off the table. But you should have been considered that best player.
JADEN IVEY: Oh, yeah. I'm just trying to showcase my talent, showcase to everybody what type of player I am. That's the biggest thing. And I obviously want to win. That's the main goal. So I'm going down there to Summer League to win, most importantly.
KRYSTEN PEEK: All right. Well, Jaden, thank you so much for the time. Congratulations going to Detroit, and good luck next season.
JADEN IVEY: Thank you.
