A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ PITCHING CLINIC A pair of three-time Cy Young Award winners square off when Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers face Max Scherzer and the Nationals in a marquee matchup between the past two World Series champions. Los Angeles is looking for a three-game sweep of its first home series this season, and Dodgers starters are 5-0 in their last seven outings. The Dodgers have won five of their last six regular-season games against the Nationals and are 11-4 versus Washington over the past four seasons. But the Nats beat Los Angeles in a five-game playoff series on the way to their 2019 title. LIKE THOSE LEFTIES AL MVP José Abreu and the Chicago White Sox will try to win their 18th straight game when facing a left-handed starter. That would tie the major league record set by Atlanta from 2004-05. The White Sox get their chance when they host Mike Minor and the Royals. Chicago’s streak dates to a loss to Detroit on Sept. 28, 2019, when lefty Tyler Alexander started for the Tigers. HOME OF THE BRAVE It's been a big week for Atlanta reserve Ehire Adrianza. He was reinstated from the restricted list before Friday night’s game against Philadelphia, just in time to launch his first pinch-hit homer — a three-run shot. Adrianza had been away from the team while completing his citizenship test. He added a pinch-hit double Saturday and scored the go-ahead run. “I’m glad to be a U.S. citizen,” said the 31-year-old Adrianza, a native of Venezuela who played the past four seasons with Minnesota following four with San Francisco. Adrianza and the Braves go for a series sweep when they host the NL East rival Phillies in prime time. Atlanta opened the season with four consecutive losses, the first three in Philadelphia, but has recovered quickly with a four-game winning streak. Drew Smyly makes his first home start for the Braves against Matt Moore. IN THE CARDS Nolan Arenado has gotten a hit in each of St. Louis’ eight games this season. The hitting streak matches Roger Maris (1967) for the longest among players new to the Cardinals. The former Colorado star is hitting .333 with two home runs and five RBIs. EXTRA TROUBLE The Twins have lost three times this season — all of them in the 10th inning with the automatic runner on second base. “The game, as we are used to playing it, does change, and we have to adapt to that,” Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said. Seattle topped the Twins 4-3 in the 10th on Saturday, helped when Minnesota reliever Taylor Rogers couldn’t get a clean grip on a bunt. “We’re talking bunts. We’re talking choppers. We’re talking putting the ball in play, making a play in the field, and that’s the difference between a win or a loss. Sometimes it stings,” Baldelli said. AT LAST Yankees newcomer Jay Bruce batted ninth for the first time in his career in a game at Tampa Bay. The 34-year-old Bruce, in his 14th season, had started at every spot in the lineup except last until Saturday. Bruce went 0 for 3, dropping his batting average to .111. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports The Associated Press
CALGARY — It took Sean Monahan breaking out of his goal-scoring slump to set the offensive tone for the Calgary Flames. Monahan snapped a 13-game goalless drought and ignited Calgary’s offence as the Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 on Saturday. Backed by a 17-save shutout by Jacob Markstrom, the Flames (17-21-3) halted their four-game losing skid with their largest win of the season. “I put a lot of pressure on myself to be a go-to guy, somebody who will provide offence,” said Monahan, who had not scored since March 13. “When you’re not doing that, it gets frustrating. “When you don’t score for a while, and obviously it was the first one of the game, it feels good.” After a scoreless first period, Monahan got the first in a barrage of goals for the Flames in the second. Alone at the side of the net, he capitalized on a defensive mix-up from the Oilers and converted Andrew Mangiapane’s pass at 3:12. “Monny’s one of the best goal-scorers this organization’s ever seen,” said Johnny Gaudreau, who had a goal and an assist in the win. “It’s nice to see him score, obviously. “When he has the puck on his stick, he has the chance to put the puck in the net every night.” Monahan’s tally was the first of four goals for Calgary on 10 shots in the second period. Calgary gained in confidence as the period progressed. They kept the pressure on and it paid off at 10:43 when Gaudreau took a perfect pass across the crease from Noah Hanifin to beat Mike Smith over the glove from a tight angle. The Flames were again rewarded for good puck movement when Elias Lindholm netted his 10th of the season, five-hole on Smith on the power play. The big-bodied Milan Lucic got the play started and later screened Smith in the crease. Calgary's captain got in on the second period’s deluge of goals. Coming off the bench and storming into the offensive zone, Mark Giordano called for a pass and fired from the right face-off dot, beating Smith between the pads. Playing their fourth game in six nights, the Oilers (25-15-2) were blanked for only the fourth time this year. They dropped to third in the North Division — seven points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs and one point behind the Winnipeg Jets. Smith stopped 27-of-32 shots in defeat, Edmonton's second regulation loss in its last 11 outings. “I was hoping we would have some energy tonight but it caught up with us,” said Oilers coach Dave Tippett. “They had energy and we didn’t. “You hope your team pushes through new levels and finds way to push through things, and you can never use excuses, but there are times when your team just doesn’t have it and there’s not enough energy in the group. Tonight was one of those times.” The Oilers upped the pressure in the third period but could not solve Markstrom. Tyson Barrie came closest when he fired a puck off the post. Brett Ritchie padded the Flames' lead, making it 5-0 with 6:30 left in the game. Calgary limited Edmonton to very few high-danger chances and gave up a season-low 17 shots. Connor McDavid ended the game with one shot. “We did a good job staying on top of their skilled guys,” said Monahan. “When you do that, you kill penalties and don’t allow those top guys to get touches, it’s going to be frustrating. I thought we did a good job at that.” The Flames are back in action in Toronto on Tuesday. The Oilers are off until Friday when they face the Canucks in Vancouver’s first game since their COVID-19 outbreak. Notes: Edmonton held a ceremony to honour the late Colby Cave earlier Saturday. DUNEDIN, Fla. — Bo Bichette had five RBIs, Randal Grichuk hit a three-run double during a seven-run second inning and the Toronto Blue Jays stopped a four-game skid by routing the Los Angeles Angels 15-1 on Saturday night following a rain delay that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours. Bichette had two-run doubles in the third and fourth, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added RBI singles in both innings as the Blue Jays went up 14-1. The pair drew bases-loaded walks in the second from José Quintana (0-1), who allowed seven runs, five hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings. After the start was delayed 2 hours, 38 minutes, the first four innings took 2:07 to play. Overall the game lasted 3:21 and ended about 12 hours before Sunday's series finale was scheduled to start. Steven Matz (2-0) gave up one run and five hits over six innings. Anthony Rendon homered for the Angels, who were trying to go 7-2 and set a franchise record for the best nine-game start to a season. Los Angeles manager Joe Maddon was ejected for arguing in the third inning, one pitch after a call that Juan Lagares was out at first base stood following a short replay review. There was a 5:45 double review of a fielder’s choice grounder by Toronto’s Danny Jansen during the second on which the game’s first run scored. Angels shortstop José Iglesias was charged with two errors for missing second base on a forceout try and making an errant throw to first base. The tarp went on the field at TD Ballpark, the Blue Jays' spring training home being used for the first three homestands, about 2 1/2 hours before the scheduled 7:07 p.m. start time as dark and ominous clouds rolled in from the nearby Gulf of Mexico. Shortly after that heavy rain, lightning and wind gusts between 40-45 mph engulfed the ballpark. A second storm struck around an hour after the original start time. He might miss just a couple of days. … LHP Ryan Borucki was reinstated from the COVID-19 IL after missing one game with vaccination side effects. … LHP Robbie Ray (bruised elbow) might be ready to pitch during a three-game series against the New York Yankees that begins Monday. HIGH PRAISE Rendon has played with a number of power hitters during his career and was asked where Ohtani stands. “He’s at the top … but don’t tell him that,” a smiling Rendon said. SAN JOSE, Calif. — Andreas Athanasiou, Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown scored in the second period ad the Los Angeles Kings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 on Saturday night. Jeff Carter also scored and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves as the Kings beat the Sharks for just the second time in eight meetings this season. Dylan Gambrell and Timo Meier scored for the Sharks, who now trail St. Louis by four points for the fourth and final playoff spot from the West Division. Arizona is three points ahead of the Sharks for fifth place. Martin Jones came in 19-5-3 in his career — including 6-1 this season — gave up four goals on 19 shot through two periods. Josef Korenar stopped all seven shots he faced in the third in his NHL debut. With the score 1-1 after the first period, Athanasiou and Iafallo scored 55 seconds apart early in the second, and then Brown beat Jones for a power play goal with 7.8 seconds left in the period to give the Kings a 4-1 cushion. Jones’ strong play was the driving force behind San Jose’s recent push that has propelled the team into the playoff hunt. But Jones perhaps showed a bit of fatigue Saturday in his seventh consecutive start, and defensive lapses by his teammates didn’t help. Carter scored his eighth goal at 11:43 of the first to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. But the Sharks evened the score five minutes later on Gambrell’s goal. GOALIE TRADE The Sharks traded backup goalie Devan Dubnyk to Colorado on Saturday for defenceman Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft. That opened the door for Korenar to get called up. Dubnyk, 34, had been strongly rumoured as a trade candidate, and he gives the Avalanche a backup goalie with post-season experience. UP NEXT Kings: Host the first of back-to-back games against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Sharks: Host the Anaheim Ducks on Monday, beginning a string of 16 games in 27 days to finish the regular season. ___ More AP NHL coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/NHL and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Joe Stiglich, The Associated Press
