At Least One Injured in Suspected 'Honey Oil' Lab Explosion in Southern California

Police in Simi Valley, California, say they found evidence of a home laboratory producing “butane honey oil” (BHO) from cannabis after an explosion left at least one person injured early on Tuesday, February 15.

According to the United States government, BHO, sometimes known as “honey oil,” is a highly potent marijuana concentrate that’s usually administered through smoking or by using an electronic cigarette or vaporizer. The latter method is commonly known as “dabbing.”

The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) said officers and the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) responded to the explosion at 1868 Bishop Lane at around 4:14 am and found “several of a single apartment’s windows were blown out, including the window frames.”

One of the two residents, 41-year-old Jason Ward, sustained burns on his feet while his roommate was unharmed, police said. Both were taken to the hospital, they added.

After officers found evidence of a lab, Ward was arrested and charged under California’s Health and Safety Code 11379.6, which prohibits the manufacturing of a controlled substance, police said. Credit: Simi Valley Police Dept. via Storyful
