KIMBERLE CRENSHAW: When I got to Harvard Law School, it was clear that the law school had a different idea about the pacing of racial justice. They were going to, kind of, wait until, you know, the pool naturally produced these candidates, sort of like, you know, the way humans grew legs and, you know, eventually walked out of the ocean. That was their view of what the long game of diversity was.

And, you know, I had a very different view of it, as did my entire cohort. And it was also a different take to think about gender, to think about the ways that Black women were experiencing discrimination in ways that were sometimes different from the conventional way that racial discrimination was thought about. And it really set in my soul that we're going to have to work hard to find the voices of Black women.

We're going to have to advocate to put them at the center. And it's well worth our while to do that.
