Fantasy FaceOff Week 7 - Justin Fields vs. Sam Darnold

Which QB will be a better fantasy play in week 7?

Video Transcript

MATT HARMON: That's right. We're gonna debate two similarly ranked players at the quarterback position. We've got guys like Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert, Josh Allen all on bye, Tank. So the people out there need some streamers. We're going to debate two guys, and you're gonna start us off with the player who his own coaching staff, Sam Darnold, is like, you know what? From what I've seen, I think we need to establish the run a little bit. So tell us why the people should be throwing out Sam Darnold when his own coaching staff is like, I don't know about this guy.

TANK WILLIAMS: Hold on. How are you gonna lead into a segment like that when this other quarterback that you have was benched for the ginger fist? But I digress. All right, so Sam Darnold--

MATT HARMON: That is a little extreme.

TANK WILLIAMS: So these defenses like the New York Giants give up the fifth most fantasy points to quarterbacks, and the Tampa Bay defense gives up the sixth most. So then let's think about this logically. So basically we're saying if all things are even, you're playing against an even defense, which offensive scheme is gonna allow the quarterback to score the most points? And it's not really rocket science. Like, Sam Darnold has the second most rushing touchdowns in the league.

So if you're talking about, hey, we need to run the ball more, he made be part of that. And at the same time, I feel like Sam Darnold and that connection with DJ Moore has shown that he could be competent against a team that's gonna allow them to shred them in the pass game, which the Giants can. So to me, until my man Justin Fields shows me that he can take advantage of a weak pass defense, I'm gonna go with the dude who's already shown me he can do it with that and with his legs. Give it to me, Sammy.

MATT HARMON: Fair points overall, but I would say, you know-- obviously, this is not a revelation for me to say this-- but man, if I just knew how like the first two drives were gonna go for the Chicago Bears, I would feel so much better about picking Justin Fields here. Obviously, it'd be great to get the answers to the test ahead of time. Again, what a revelatory statement by me.

But my point in that is basically every single team has just given up on running the ball against Tampa Bay. Like, they don't even try. But if there was ever a coaching staff that's dumb enough to go like run-run-pass, run-run-pass in their first two drives against the Bucs, it would be the Bears.

But nevertheless, nevertheless, I do think Justin Fields going against the defense that's 24th in explosive pass rate allowed-- like, we're not asking for a ton of volume here for Justin Fields. We're banking on big plays. Like, this is the week for Justin Fields to go out there and show what he can do. You know, Tampa Bay's pass rush has been OK. We know the Bears offensive line has not that great.

But overall, I think you're starting to see Justin Fields take off. Running too-- that was a big thing last week against the Packers, should be a big thing in this match-up. I think that we can get Justin Fields' best game of his pro career. I would rather bet on a player that's on the uptick than that's clearly on the down tick, which Sam Darnold is here. So I am gonna to go with Justin Fields as a streaming quarterback, and I am obviously correct over Tank Williams here. You're welcome.

TANK WILLIAMS: I win.

MATT HARMON: You're welcome.
