TORONTO — As expected, Toronto FC will join the Raptors and Blue Jays in Florida for the start of the Major League Soccer season. Toronto will stay in the Orlando area, training at the Omni Resort at ChampionsGate some 35 kilometres southwest of Orlando Airport. The team said it can play home matches in both Orlando and Tampa. Orlando City SC plays at Exploria Stadium while the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship play at the 7,500-seat Al Lang Stadium in nearby St. Petersburg, where CF Montreal has held its training camp in the past, The team said its stay in Florida will be contingent upon health and safety regulations as borders reopen in Canada. “We are unable to make BMO Field in Toronto our home for the start of the MLS season,” TFC GM Ali Curtis said in a statement Friday. "But we will continue to work with local and federal officials to monitor the situation back home and return as soon as possible.” The Raptors are playing out of Amalie Arena in Tampa while the Blue Jays, who played in Buffalo, N.Y., last season, are holding their first two homestands in nearby Dunedin. TFC finished out the 2020 season in East Hartford, Conn., due to pandemic-related border restrictions. The team played just four games at BMO Field last season. The team is no stranger to ChampionsGate, having held part of its pre-season camp there in past years. A short walk across the hotel golf course leads to training fields. TFC is currently training under the bubble at the club's north Toronto training centre and at BMO Field, whose pitch has underground heating. The team was granted permission to open camp early, on Feb. 17, to prepare for the Canadian Championship final against Hamilton's Forge FC. The winner of that match advances to a two-legged Scotiabank Champions League round-of-16 tie against Mexico's Club Leon. The return leg is April 14. The MLS regular season is slated to kick off April 17. The date and venue of the Canadian Championship final have yet to be announced, although March 20 has been floated. TAMPA, Fla. — Domingo Germán pitched two scoreless innings for the New York Yankees in his spring training debut Friday, a week after publicly apologizing for actions that led to his 2019 suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. There was no noticeable reaction from the socially distanced crowd of 2,352 at Steinbrenner Field when Germán took the mound to start against the Detroit Tigers. "I felt welcomed,” Germán said through a translator. Germán struck out four and allowed one hit, a double by Wilson Ramos. The 28-year-old righty walked none. “Exciting to be back on the field, be back with my teammates,” Germán said. ”I felt relaxed, confident.” Germán was 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA for the Yankees when MLB put him on administrative leave while investigating an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend, with whom he has at least one child. Germán missed the final nine games of the regular season and all nine of New York’s playoff games. On Jan. 2, 2020, he was suspended for 63 games — he was out for the entire pandemic-shortened 2020 season and playoffs. Back with the Yankees for the start of spring training, Germán spoke with his New York teammates last week and issued a public apology the next day. Germán hopes to earn a spot in a rotation projected to include Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery and newcomers Jameson Taillon and Corey Kluber. He also is looking to resolve some uneasiness among his teammates. “Put it in the past and move away from it,” Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez said through a translator. “Start taking steps toward a special future.” Germán pitched during the off-season in the Dominican Winter League. “Pitching over there helped,” Germán said. “Put me at ease. I could still compete and that I can find my way back to be the same pitcher that I was." Germán made his big league debut in 2017. “Overall I thought I saw confidence from him,” Sanchez said. “That’s what I wanted. I wanted for him to go out there and have fun and just execute with confidence.” The Yankees and Tigers played to a 1-all tie. SHIFTING DOLLARS Yankees general manager Brian Cashman traded reliever Adam Ottavino to Boston in order to save money that was reallocated to re-sign Brett Gardner and add relievers Darren O’Day and Justin Wilson. Ottavino was traded to the rival Red Sox on Jan. 25, and the Yankees agreed to send the rival Red Sox $850,000 to cover part of the $8 million owed to Ottavino, a 35-year-old right-hander entering the final season of a $27 million, three-year contract. “The Ottavino trade was difficult. We wanted to buy some flexibility,” Cashman said Friday in his first public comments on the moves. “We’re a completely right-handed lineup for the most part. And so and we play, obviously, Boston within our division for more times than you want. So it’s going to create great lanes for him. ... You’ve got to focus when you make these type of decisions on what’s in it for you. ... The method to the madness was to buy flexibility you can utilize either now or later.” O’Day agreed Feb. 10 to a deal guaranteeing $3.15 million, and Wilson and Gardner agreed Feb. 23 to $5.15 million, two-year deals. RIGHT-SIDE DOMINATION New York again figures to start seven right-handed batters in most games along with switch-hitting centre fielder Aaron Hicks, and eight on days that Clint Frazier starts in left over Gardner. “There’s going to be lanes for other managers to navigate with if they have a starter/reliever that is really difficult on right-handers,“ Cashman said. "Of course, that’s an area of weakness, the fact that we’re so right-handed and don’t have as much mix and match there. DETROIT — Blake Griffin's time in Detroit is over, another significant step in a rebuilding process that has the Pistons at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The veteran forward and the Pistons agreed to a contract buyout. “I thank the Pistons organization for working together on an outcome that benefits all involved and I wish the franchise success in the future,” Griffin said Friday in a statement released by the team. The Pistons announced last month that they would keep Griffin out of the lineup while resolving his future, a clear sign that the star forward could be on the way out. The Pistons also traded Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks last month. Griffin, who turns 32 later this month, came to Detroit in a trade during the 2017-18 season. The question now is how valuable he might be to a contending team. He had a terrific 2018-19 season for the Pistons, helping them to the playoffs, but his health has been a concern in Detroit, just as it had been when he was with the Los Angeles Clippers. Griffin has averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists in the 20 games he's played this season. “As we stated from the beginning of our discussions with Blake and his representatives, our goal has been to facilitate a resolution for the future that maximizes the interests of both Blake and our team,” Pistons general manager Troy Weaver said. “We appreciate all of Blake’s efforts on and off the court in Detroit, have great respect for him as a player and a person and we wish him all the best in the future.” Detroit is just 10-26 this season and had three first-round picks in last year's draft. A couple of them — Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey — have shown some promise. The Pistons also acquired Jerami Grant in the off-season, and he's averaging 23.4 points per game. All of that means it makes sense for the Pistons to move on without Griffin. Detroit traded big man Andre Drummond around this time last year, and the team's off-season reshuffling left Griffin as one of the few holdovers. If healthy, Griffin can offer size, versatility and veteran leadership to a contender. He was traded to the Pistons just seven months after signing a $171 million, five-year contract to stay with the Clippers. A couple seasons ago, he averaged a career-high 24.5 points — but even in that 2018-19 campaign, Detroit was swept in the first round of the playoffs, and the team wasn't able to build on that. Once one of the league's most exciting dunkers, Griffin's game produces fewer highlights now, but he's become a serviceable threat from 3-point range and can help a team in a number of ways. His injury problems might be less of an issue if there isn't as much pressure on him to play heavy minutes. “Blake has been a great representative for our franchise and for the city of Detroit,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said. “His work ethic and his approach to the game contributed a lot to our culture. BERLIN — Despite a new coach, Schalke took another step toward Germany’s second division on Friday with a scoreless draw in the Bundesliga against relegation rival Mainz. The Gelsenkirchen-based club had been hoping for a change of fortune under new coach Dimitrios Grammozis, its fifth of a turbulent season, but the old problems remained and its winless run stretched to nine games since its only win of the season. Schalke remained last, eight points behind Mainz, Arminia Bielefeld and Hertha Berlin. Bielefeld has two games in hand, while Hertha hosts Augsburg on Saturday. Schalke appointed the previously little-known Grammozis on Tuesday, two days after a purge of five senior club staff including the coach, sporting director, team co-ordinator, lead fitness coach, and the assistant coach. The 42-year-old Grammozis made three changes from the team that lost to Stuttgart 5-1 last weekend, bringing in goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, midfielder Raman Benito, and the 18-year-old Kerim Çalhanoglu for his Bundesliga debut. Çalhanoglu is the cousin of Turkey and AC Milan midfielder Hakan Çalhanoglu. But the home team rarely came out of its own half and showed little sign of getting the win it needed to rekindle any slim hopes of Bundesliga survival. Schalke defender Shkodran Mustafi went close with a rare chance when his header after a corner produced a fine save from Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner in the 18th. Atlanta Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter has stepped up his rehabilitation from right knee surgery but it will be another two weeks before the team knows how close he is to returning. The Hawks announced Friday that Hunter has been cleared to do unrestricted weight room work and progressive on-court drills. His condition will be reviewed again on March 19. Hunter, who underwent surgery Feb. 8, is among a rash of injuries that have stifled the Hawks' progress and led to the firing Monday of coach Lloyd Pierce. Atlanta has won two straight under interim coach Nate McMillan but it still just 16-20 at the All-Star break, ranking 11th in the Eastern Conference. The team did receive a boost this week when Bogdan Bogdanovic returned from a fractured knee that kept him out for nearly two months. He is third on the team with 17.2 points per game, adding important scoring balance behind Trae Young and John Collins.
