B-SPIRIT-A2Y helps turn Baltimore's youth into thriving adults

A mission to help turn Baltimore's youth into thriving adults started from the ground up, literally. The afterschool tutoring and mentoring program B-SPIRIT-A2Y started in 1993 in the Park Heights basement of Nargas Hyman's grandmother's house. Now in its third generation, B-SPIRIT-A2Y stands for "Brothers and Sisters Providing Information Relevant to Inspire the African American Youth." "They used to come here years ago -- what? 30 years ago, now? -- to play Nintendo and basketball, and they had so much idle time. So, we wanted to incorporate some educational programs," Hyman said.
