Some Animals Spared From Deadly Flooding at Nova Kakhovka Zoo

Some small animals survived a devastating flood at the Kazkova Dibrova zoo in Kherson Oblast because they were being kept at another location, the zoo wrote on Wednesday, June 7.

On Tuesday, the zoo’s management said around 300 animals had drowned in the flood after the Kakhovka dam broke.

However, it turned out that at least some of those were off site at the time, the zoo said in an update Wednesday. “The workers, being in a state of shock, gave me inaccurate information,” a Facebook post read.

The zoo posted a video showing ferrets, a parrot named Venya and other birds, chinchillas, flying squirrels, and other small animals it said had survived. A dog and some cats also possibly survived, the zoo said, appealing for anyone who saw them to get in touch.

The zoo said it was also looking for homes for 46 guinea pigs that also survived. Credit: Kazkova Dibrova via Storyful
