This is a huge week for Newcastle and they needed a positive result from this game to ensure they go into Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in the ideal frame of mind. It was hard fought and not particularly pretty but the visitors got the job done to secure a victory at West Ham that was also important for Newcastle's Premier League form - as it propelled them to within two points of the top four. With injuries and suspensions hitting Newcastle this was a chance for other players to step up and one of those to do just that was Harvey Barnes.
There's very little for West Ham to play for this season as they sit well clear of the relegation zone, but unlikely to trouble the European spots, and that factor showed in this performance. The first 10 minutes were encouraging as the Hammers caused Newcastle problems down the wings and if Tomas Soucek had scored inside the first minute then it could have perhaps been a very different game. Jarrod Bowen felt he had a penalty shout in the second half but was otherwise pretty quiet.
St Johnstone have fuelled their relegation escape bid with their Cup exploits and now they have the reward of a trip to Hampden to celebrate. It was with the win over Motherwell back in January that Simo Valakari's ended a nine-game run without victory, and they haven't looked back since. In the first half, they relied on Andy Fisher's heroics in goal and some wasteful Livingston attacking to go into the break level.
