Nine-man Newcastle cling onto a priceless win over Southampton. This was a thrilling, end-to-end game throughout and Newcastle quickly took advantage to secure a commanding early lead. First, Willock tapped in a debut goal after brilliant work from Saint-Maximin, before Almiron's deflected effort doubled their lead. Minamino pulled one back for Southampton with a tremendous run and finish, only for Almiron to restore the two goal advantage before the interval. The second half swung decisively in the away side's favour though: Ward-Prowse immediately whipped in a brilliant free-kick and Hendrick's red card gave them real hope. However, Newcastle defended bravely and even after they went down to nine men, when Schar was stretchered off, they held on to claim a huge three points.
