'The Walking Dead': Where to find 14 major filming locations

To celebrate the Oct. 22 Season 8 premiere of  The Walking Dead — the series’ 100th episode — Yahoo Entertainment will be posting a new TWD-related story every day through the season opener.

The Walking Dead has traveled across the southeastern United States for seven seasons, with survivors taking refuge in abandoned houses, stores, churches, schools, and even carnivals. The series started with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) waking up in an abandoned hospital outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, he’s reunited with his family, taken on new friends and allies, lost family members, lived in prisons and on farms, and ended up in a once-tony suburban development in Alexandria, Virginia.

Here’s a look at 14 major locations from The Walking Dead, their real-life uses, and even their addresses, in case you want to plan a superfan road trip.

The Walking Dead Season 8 premieres Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. on AMC.

CDC (Season 1)

Filming did not take place at the real Centers for Disease Control, since only one movie (Contagion) has had permission to use the real thing’s exterior. Instead, the show used Cobb Energy Center’s exterior and the interior of the Georgia World Congress Center. Not much to see here — just a regular office building.

Carol’s House (Season 7)

After recuperating from injuries in the Kingdom, Carol leaves to live alone at this quaint and (mostly) peaceful cottage surrounded by a picket fence.

Grady Memorial (Season 5)

Post-prison evacuation, Beth and Daryl go on the run, until she’s abducted by Dawn’s crew at the hospital. She meets Noah and they formulate a plan to escape, which fails. Later, Beth is shot during a tense exchange between Dawn and Rick’s crews.

The Hilltop (Season 6)

The seemingly peaceful community is comprised of a main house, several outbuildings, and a handful of trailers. It’s overseen by the small-minded, cowardly Gregory, who has struck a deal with the Saviors to provide goods and services.

The Sanctuary (Season 7)

The home of Negan and his gang of Saviors is set in Raleigh Studios. Exterior shots were filmed here, while interior shots were filmed on sound stages.

Herschel’s Farm (Season 2)

This is private property, so you won’t really be able to gawk at the house where Rick and company met up with Hershel, Maggie, and Beth in Season 2.

The Kingdom (Season 7)

Ezekiel reigns over this large community (with help of pet tiger Shiva, of course), which is set at Tyler Perry Studios.

Woodbury (Season 3)

Don’t drive to Woodbury, Georgia if you want to see where the Governor ruled. Filming actually took place in the heart of Senoia, Georgia (and the outskirts of the town are used in quite a few other locations).

Oceanside (Season 7)

Here is where Tara met the all-female community whose male companions were murdered by Negan and the Saviors. That experience has made them very wary of outsiders.

Alexandria Safe Zone (Season 5)

Rick and company finally find a secure, safe place to call home, thanks to recruiter Aaron and overlord Deanna. Unfortunately, they’ve now found themselves under the thumb of Negan.

The Prison (Season 3)

After being cleared of walkers, the prison acts as a stronghold for Rick and crew. They even plant vegetables! But it soon becomes a death trap — Lori dies in childbirth here, and then the Governor invades. The prison scenes were filmed at Raleigh Studios.

Terminus (Season 4)

This rail yard seemed like a welcome destination at the end of a wearying journey; instead, it turned out that this road ended in hell. The gloomy, dystopian look of the place probably should’ve tipped off Rick and crew that all was not right here.

The Bellwood Quarry (Season 1)

The tranquil aquamarine water belied the camp’s roiling tensions. This is where Rick first reunited with wife Lori and son Carl — though unbeknownst to him, Lori had hooked up with his best friend, Shane. This is also where most of Rick’s crew assembled, including Carol, Andrea, Dale, and others.

The Junkyard (Season 4)

Home to Jadis and the Scavengers, the junkyard is packed with twisted scrap metal, broken-down cars, and unknown heaps of trash, making it unlike any set in the series. It is filmed at Raleigh Studios.
