A few days ago, a Capitol Visitor Center tour guide pointed visitors to John Trumbull’s “Declaration of Independence,” the painting in the Capitol Rotunda that depicts the moment that famous document was presented to the Second Continental Congress. The declaration was signed July 4, 1776, and the day has been celebrated ever since. Click through to view photos of Independence Day events throughout the years.
