The most drawn-out celebrity divorces

Sometimes a lawyer is a celebrity’s best friend, but with these couples the opposite is probably true. Why? Because long, drawn-out divorces certainly aren’t hurting an attorney’s pocketbook. Take a look at the longest celebrity divorces.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver

It’s been six years since Maria Shriver filed for divorce, yet she’s still legally married to the former governor. Months after it was revealed that Schwarzenegger had a secret love child, the businesswoman decided to end her marriage. The couple shares two children who are no longer minors, so custody isn’t what’s holding the process up; rather, it’s how to divide their property and $400 million fortune. (Photo: Getty Images)

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett

The comedic duo announced they were separating in 2012 after about a decade of marriage, but it took four years for their divorce to become final. “Imagine spreading everything you care about on a blanket and then tossing the whole thing up in the air. The process of divorce is about loading that blanket, throwing it up, watching it all spin, and worrying what stuff will break when it lands,” Poehler remarked in her 2014 memoir, Yes Please. “I don’t think a ten-year marriage constitutes failure. That being said, getting a divorce really sucks.” (Photo: Getty Images)

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

The couple’s marriage came to an end in 2014, but their divorce wasn’t finalized for two years. While rocky at times, Carey and Cannon have managed to get the friendly exes and co-parenting thing down. “It’s funny how that comes about, because we’ll deal with that stuff weeks or months ago but when the media finds out about it … we’ve been past that stuff for quite some time,” Cannon said after their divorce was official. Richard Gere and Carey Lowell

Divorce proceedings weren’t the happiest of times for the longtime couple. Lowell filed for divorce in 2012 after 12 years of marriage, but they had a bitter battle until the end, when their issues were resolved in 2016. According to Page Six, the pair fought over money as they agreed to share custody of their teenage son. Gere was reported to be worth $45 million at the time. (Photo: Getty Images)

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

Lopez and Anthony split in 2011 with the couple filing for divorce the following year. However, it wasn’t until 2014 that the pair were officially ex-husband and -wife. That was long enough for both Lopez and Anthony to each begin and end new romantic relationships, with Casper Smart and Chloe Green, respectively. The Shades of Blue star ended up with primary custody, while no spousal support was given to either. The two remain good friends today. (Photo: Getty Images)

Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom

After the NBA star’s infidelity and substance abuse issues were made public, Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013. In 2015, the stars finalized their divorce, but a judge had yet to sign off on it before the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star reversed course months later. After Odom was placed in a coma and nearly lost his life due to an overdose, Khloé rushed to his bedside in Las Vegas and stopped proceedings. After she helped nurse her ex back to health, they eventually went through with ending their marriage officially in 2016. (Photo: Getty Images)

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Despite announcing their separation in 2015, the couple is still married. While there were rumors the pair might reconcile, Affleck and Garner coordinated their divorce filings nearly two years later. While it was reported that the settlement would be swift and easy, it has not been revealed yet that their divorce is finalized. Affleck has nevertheless moved on romantically, as he’s said to be getting more serious with girlfriend Lindsay Shookus. (Photo: Getty Images)

Chris Rock and Malaak Compton

After ending their 20-year marriage in 2014, Chris and Malaak squabbled for about two years to come to terms regarding their divorce, reportedly in a disagreement over the amount of child support she should receive. Their settlement terms were kept private. “I asked myself, ‘Do I want to be angry for a year?’ It’s not a cool place to be. It’s not healthy,” Rock later said of not letting divorce get the best of him. (Photo: Getty Images)

Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy

After four years of contentious negotiations, the Real Housewives of New York star eventually settled her divorce from Jason Hoppy in 2016. Exact terms were kept private, but Frankel was thrilled to put her marriage behind her. “Our client is ecstatic that this long chapter is over, and she is looking forward to moving on with her life,” a lawyer said at the time. Unfortunately, drama with Hoppy hasn’t gone away, as he recently took a plea deal for harassment and stalking charges she brought against him. (Photo: Getty Images)
