From creative cold-shoulders to sexy sheers, the hottest trends from London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week took a somber tone this season. Shades of dark, crimson red reminiscent of the recent Emmy award-winning show, The Handmaid’s Tale made a big splash in several designer collections including Marques’ Almeida, Emporio Armani, and Hussein Chalayan. This color might be the designers’ visual commentary on the rampant terrorist violence that had occurred in London and the greater U.K. within the last year, with the latest incident taking place on the very first day of LFW.

But it wasn’t all dark and moody. The “cold shoulder” trend expanded in creative new ways this season, as models exposed their shoulders — and more — in tops, coats, and dresses. And a colorful hodgepodge of prints and patterns helped solidify an obvious patchwork trend seen at MM6 Maison Margiela and Peter Pilotto.

Other designers decided to go sheer with see-through blouses and dresses, seen at Antonio Berardi, Pringle of Scotland, Rejina Pyo, and Emilia Wickstead. This trend was spotted heavily in New York too, but let’s see if its popularity will carry onto Milan.

In terms of outerwear, raincoats reigned over London. Raincoats were one of the most popular outerwear pieces spotted in the SS18 collections. This isn’t surprising considering the fickle nature of London’s weather. At least this way, now you don’t need to carry that annoying umbrella everywhere you go.

Here is a look back at the top five trends to arise from London Fashion Week.

Crimson Red

London designers take a much darker, moodier, and possibly political approach this season incorporating splashes of crimson red onto dresses, coats, and blazers on the fringe of multiple violent terrorist attacks in the country. This color choice is also reminiscent of the attire worn on the Emmy award-winning, politically-charged show, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ (Photo: ImaxTree, Art: Quinn Lemmers for Yahoo Lifestyle)

Patchwork

Sewing together mismatched prints and patterns of all shades in classic “patchwork” form was the popular choice at several shows, including Marques’ Almeida, Anya Hindmarch, MM6 Maison Margiela, and Peter Pilotto. (Photo: ImaxTree, Art: Quinn Lemmers for Yahoo Lifestyle)
