Yasmany Tomas arrested for criminal speeding after being clocked at 105 mph
On Thursday morning at 9:26am, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas was pulled over and arrested on a freeway between Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. According to KTAR Arizona, Tomas had allegedly been driving 105 mph, 40 miles above the speed limit.
Tomas, a 27-year-old Cuban native, was charged with criminal speeding and reckless driving, and his car, a 2015 Mercedes S550, was impounded. KTAR Arizona is reporting that Tomas was not impaired or under the influence at the time of his arrest.
The Diamondbacks released this statement about Tomas’ arrest on Thursday afternoon:
“We are very disappointed to learn of this news. We are still gathering facts, and will refrain from further comment at this time as this is a pending legal matter.”
If Tomas is found or pleads guilty, the maximum penalty is 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Tomas’ license could also be suspended.
Tomas had a difficult 2017. He hit .241/.294/.464, a sharp downturn from the career highs he put up in 2016. He dealt with injuries for most of the season — he suffered a groin injury in early June which would keep him out of commission for the rest of the year. After some stops and starts in his rehab, Tomas had core surgery in August, and had surgery again in late December to clean up the scar tissue.
Tomas is expected to be ready for spring training and will probably be the Diamondbacks’ starting left fielder. That is, unless they decide to re-sign J.D. Martinez.
