Yankees' P Corey Kluber sidelined at least 4 weeks with muscle strain in shoulder

One start removed from throwing a no-hitter, New York Yankees starting pitcher Corey Kluber left Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with tightness in his right shoulder.

On Wednesday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Kluber's been diagnosed with a subscapularis muscle strain and will be sidelined from throwing for four weeks. The subscapularis is part of the rotator cuff. Kluber missed all but one inning last season with a muscle tear in the same shoulder.

Kluber lasted three innings before his exit on Tuesday, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five.

Kluber threw 101 pitches while no-hitting the Texas Rangers in a 2-0 Yankees win on May 19. The 35-year-old two-time Cy Young winner entered Tuesday's game at 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA, 1.172 WHIP, 50 strikeouts and 20 walks in 50.1 innings. This is his first season with the Yankees, which entered Tuesday's game in third place in the AL East at 28-19.

Corey Kluber missed last season with right shoulder injury

Kluber missed all but one inning of his lone season with the Texas Rangers in 2020 with a muscle tear in his right shoulder. In 2019, he suffered a fractured right forearm after being hit with a line drive while pitching for the Cleveland Indians.

The Yankees were obviously aware of Kluber's injury history prior to signing him to a one-year deal this offseason. So far the gamble had paid off, with Kluber winning his fourth straight decision in last week's no-hitter.
