Yahoo Sports World Series tickets: Washington more expensive than Houston
HOUSTON — There’s no shortage of excitement here, as fans packed Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night in their colorful Astros gear and their Jose Altuve jerseys. Turns out, however, the real money for this World Series will be in Washington D.C.
Fans are paying a pretty penny to get into Games 1 and 2 in Houston, but they’re paying even more to see the Washington Nationals play in their first World Series.
According to TickPick — an online secondary market for tickets — the average price in Houston is about $230 less than D.C. The average ticket price in Houston is $998.36, compared to $1,228.51 in D.C.
Game 1, it turns out, is actually the cheapest ticket of the series, according to TickPick, with an average price of $780.56. The prices rise throughout the series, as smart fans are looking to be there when either team can win the World Series.
"The average ticket price for the 2019 World Series is similar to that of all other World Series dating back to 2013,” said Brett Goldberg, TickPick co-founder and co-CEO. “The demand for the games in Houston is down slightly compared to the Astros' last appearance in 2017 when they were able to win their first-ever World Series. However, we are experiencing significant demand for the Nationals as this is their first World Series appearance. If the Nationals are in position to close out the World Series at home in Game 4 or 5, it could be one of the most expensive tickets in D.C. history."
The average prices of the rest of the series look like this, as of Tuesday afternoon, according to TickPick:
• Game 2: $865.44
• Game 3: $1,246.80
• Game 4: $1,322.48
• Game 5: $1,116.25
• Game 6: $1,234.38
• Game 7: $1,112.76
The average “get-in” price in Houston was a bit more manageable, but still not cheap — $412. Meanwhile, the “get in” price in D.C. is around $800.
That doesn’t mean some fans aren’t dropping big money in Houston. The Action Network’s Darren Rovell reported that someone bought a pair of fifth-row tickets behind home plate on Tuesday for $41,254. Another buyer already beat that in D.C., however, paying $53,243.16 for a pair of tickets in the third row behind home plate, according to Rovell.
If you’re curious how these prices compare to other major sporting events in their cities, well, baseball hasn’t caught up to some of the others yet. According to TickPick, the average price on the secondary market for Super Bowl LI in 2017 was $3,755.06. Meanwhile, current Nats prices are a tad below the average price in D.C. for the 2018 NHL Finals. That was $1,366.85 compared to $1,228.51.
