Yahoo Sports Wizards star Russell Westbrook leaves Game 2 against 76ers with ankle injury
Washington Wizards point guard Russell Westbrook suffered a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's Game 2 against the Philadelphia 76ers. He did not return to the 120-95 blowout loss.
Westbrook stepped on Sixers wing Furkan Korkmaz's foot on a fast break. He played through a tweak in the same ankle minutes earlier, but this time limped to the locker room with 10:28 remaining in a game Philadelphia led 98-81. The Wizards did not immediately provide an update on Westbrook's health status.
Adding insult to injury, a Sixers fan poured popcorn on Westbrook as he entered the tunnel. He had to be restrained on his bad ankle by team personnel and arena security. The fan was ejected from the game.
Westbrook had 10 points on 2-for-10 shooting, 11 assists and six rebounds at the time of the injury.
His status is a major factor for Washington's fleeting hopes in the first-round playoff series. The Wizards are a two-man show featuring Westbrook and fellow All-Star guard Bradley Beal. They do the bulk of the work for a shallow roster, and Washington cannot afford to lose Westbrook or even have him limited in Game 3.
Westbrook told reporters after the Game 2 loss he planned to get treatment on his ailing ankle on Thursday. The Wizards host Game 3 on Saturday.
