Wimbledon: Upsets continue with No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari falling in Round 2

You can say one thing for sure about women's tennis at this year's three Grand Slams: you never ever know what will happen.

That's been even truer at Wimbledon. Following three straight days of unexpected upsets, we got two more to start Thursday morning.

Elina Svitolina eliminated in straight sets

Elina Svitolina's Wimbledon ended much earlier than she anticipated. The No. 3 seed (and the No. 5 women's tennis player in the world) lost to Magda Linette in her Round 2 match. Linette, who is unseeded, beat Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 in 65 minutes for the biggest win of her career and the biggest upset of the tournament so far.

The difference-maker for Linette was her winners. She hit 28 while Svitolina had just eight. That's a huge drop-off for Svitolina, who hit 34 winners in her Round 1 match against Alison Van Uytvanck. Svitolina also had just two break points all match.

This is Svitolina's worst Grand Slam result of the year (she made it to Round 4 at the Australian Open and Round 3 at the French Open), and her worst finish at Wimbledon since 2018. She made it to the semifinals in 2019, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep.

Svitolina is the sixth top-10 women's seed to exit the tournament in the early rounds. The only women left in the top 10 are No. 1 Ash Barty, who breezed through her Round 2 match on Thursday, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 7 Iga Swiatek and No. 8 Karolina Pliskova. Sabalenka, Swiatek and Pliskova will all play their Round 3 matches on Friday.

Maria Sakkari loses to American Shelby Rogers

Maria Sakkari has come back down to Earth after flying so high at the French Open. Seeded 15th, Sakkari battled against unseeded American Shelby Rodgers for nearly two hours, but couldn't pull out a win in her Round 2 match. Rodgers beat Sakkari 7-5, 6-4 in 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Rodgers, who has been surging since the schedule got back on track after the pandemic, looked excellent on the grass. After making it all the way to the French Open final two weeks ago, Sakkari couldn't consistently match her intensity.

Sakkari was heartbroken after the match, but was able to find a silver lining in her loss.
