Will Ferrell's Buddy the Elf highlights Petr Mrazek's Christmas mask (Photos)

The new mask of Detroit Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek holds a popular Christmas movie reference. The headgear has a painting of Will Ferrell portraying Buddy from the 2003 film “Elf.”

Dave Gunnarsson created the design and said he wanted to go for a Christmas tree look.

“I was thinking, how about transform the mask into a Christmas tree loaded with Christmas presents under it. It should be a total Christmas mask,” Gunnarsson wrote on his Facebook page. “I started to paint and it was a fun adventure. And a cool elf we all love also popped into the party to dance around the tree.”

Here is how Mrazek looked skating in practice with the mask on.

This isn’t the first time the 24-year-old Mrazek has put a pop culture reference on a mask. For the World Cup of Hockey, he had Peter Griffin of “Family Guy” climbing the CN Tower painted on his headgear.

Ferrell is a big sports fan and a frequent visitor to Los Angeles Kings games.

Mrazek’s mask, along with the Christmas mask for teammate Jimmy Howard will be auctioned off on the team’s website. The money raised through the auction will benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Both players will wear their masks through Dec. 23.
