Wil Myers steals second, third and home in same inning

When former Kansas City Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson coined the phrase “that’s what speed do,” he probably wasn’t thinking it would apply to many first basemen. San Diego Padres infielder Wil Myers isn’t your typical first baseman, though.

Myers showed off his wheels during Wednesday’s 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Myers managed to steal second, third and home all in the same inning.

As you might imagine, that doesn’t happen too often. Myers is the 51st player to steal all three bases in the same inning, according to Nathan Ruiz of MLB.com. He’s the first since Dee Gordon to accomplish the feat. Gordon managed it as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 2011.

Look, we know what you’re saying … Myers technically stole home, but it wasn’t a straight steal. That is true. He was only able to swipe the bag because the catcher threw down to second base. Once that happened, Myers used his wheels to beat the throw back home.

We can understand if you’re not completely satisfied by that, since it’s less exciting. But it still goes in the box score as a steal of home.

Though Myers is a first baseman, swiping bags is no big thing for him. He is a converted outfielder, so he has more speed than you might expect. Myers actually stole 28 bases last season. That ranked second among all first basemen, behind Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt has the lead once again this year, with 16 stolen bases. Even after Wednesday’s outburst, Myers remains in second among first basemen with 14 steals.

As long as Goldschmidt is around, Myers may continue finishing as the second-fastest first baseman. And while that seems like damning him with faith praise, there’s no shame in finishing second when Paul Goldschmidt is first.
