Why Charlotte is a princess but her kids probably won't be

While big brother Prince George's children will have official royal titles, Princess Charlotte's future offspring will unlikely be princes or princesses.

There are two ways to become a princess -- you either need to marry a prince or be born the daughter of a prince.

In Duchess Kate's case, she married Prince William and took on his royal title. Though there is debate on what to actually call Kate, she became Princess William of Wales, in addition to Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Cambridge, when she tied the knot. In fact, on Price George's birth certificate, Kate's occupation is listed as Princess of the United Kingdom.

When it comes to the royal lineage, grandchildren born to the sons of the monarch receive the title of prince or princess, but those born to the daughters of a monarch don't. In the case of Prince William's family, Prince George's children will be princes and princesses, while Princess Charlotte's kids will not. The only way this would change is if there's a tragedy that affects the British lineage.

This is why Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of Prince Andrew, are princesses, but Zara Philips, the daughter of Princess Anne, is not.

Though Charlotte's kids won't hold the title of prince or princess, a law change in 2013 made sure that she wouldn't be overtaken in the line of succession even if Kate and William have another boy.
