Whitecaps part ways with DP midfielder Robson

The Barry Robson era did not turn out to be what the Vancouver Whitecaps had envisioned when announcing his signing last February.

The Whitecaps and the Scottish international and Designated Player parted ways Monday, putting an end to an underwhelming time in MLS for the former Middlesbrough and Celtic player. The 34-year-old Robson tallied three goals and two assists after joining the club during the summer transfer period, and he will not return for a first full season in the league.

"Unfortunately Barry and his family never fully settled in Vancouver, and we’ve mutually decided to move in different directions," Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said in a team statement.

The move opens up a Designated Player spot on on the Whitecaps' roster and also clears a significant amount of cap space. Because Robson joined the club midseason, he only accounted for $175,000 of the team's salary cap, but had he been with the club for the full 2013 season, he would have taken up $350,000, per league roster rules.

Robson's most notable appearances included a stretch of two games in July in which he scored in a 2-2 draw against eventual MLS Cup champion Los Angeles and again in a 2-1 win over eventual Supporters' Shield winner San Jose. He also tallied a goal and an assist in a 4-0 rout of Chivas USA on Oct. 3.
