White Sox suspend Chris Sale for destroying team equipment

The Chicago White Sox announced on Sunday that ace pitcher Chris Sale has been suspended for five days for "violating team rules, insubordination, and destroying team equipment."

Sale was a late scratch Saturday after a "clubhouse incident before the game," which reportedly involved Sale slicing up the team's throwback jerseys with a knife.

White Sox senior vice-president and GM Rick Hahn said in a statement that while they appreciate their pitcher's talent and passion, "there is a correct way and an incorrect way to express concerns about team rules and organizational expectations."

The suspension will cost Sale $250,000 US of his $9.15 million salary.

He was also fined about $12,700 – the cost of the destroyed jerseys – according to a person familiar with the penalty.
