Which four NFL teams would you put in a college-style playoff?

College football announced its four playoff teams on Sunday and the field was met with a predictable round of griping over the teams that got snubbed. (Hello Penn State and Michigan fans!)

Over here in NFL fandom, we’re blessed with a playoff system that allows 12 teams into the postseason dance. Now that might be a little big, but the positives outweigh the negative. Not only do we benefit from four great weekends of football (as opposed to only two days of college playoffs), but NFL playoff controversies are normally limited to wondering why a division winner with a lousy record gets to host a wild-card game against a better team.

All that said, it’s a fun exercise to wonder what four NFL teams would be in a college-style playoff after the 12 games they’ve played. And which would be the teams left feeling jilted?

I took a stab at naming a field in the video above and it wasn’t an easy exercise.

Sure, the Dallas Cowboys are the Alabama on this group: A clear-cut No. 1 seed that owns a 2 1/2 game lead in the NFC with an 11-1 record.

But then who do you put No. 2?

The New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders are co-leaders of the AFC at 10-2. The Patriots are an annual powerhouse and a ratings monster so the knee-jerk reaction would be New England. But the Raiders actually hold the tiebreaker due to an obscure rule. So would you make the Pats visit Oakland the first week of the playoffs, removing any possibility of a snowy Tuck Rule Game rematch?

Also, are we sure the Raiders deserve a spot right now? The AFC West is basically the Big Ten in this scenario with three teams able to make a case. The 9-3 Kansas City Chiefs are one game behind the Raiders in the standings, but can boast a decisive road win over the Raiders in Week 6. The two teams play each other this Thursday, so maybe it’s just better to declare that the AFC West title game and put the winner in?

As for the fourth spot, do we let a second AFC West team in? Or should it go to the 8-3-1 Seattle Seahawks, who would join their neighbors, the Washington Huskies, as being the last team in?

What do we say to the Detroit Lions and New York Giants, who are both 8-4? What about the 7-5 Atlanta Falcons ? A 7-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that is playing its best football of the year right now? A 7-5 Pittsburgh Steelers team that could be dangerous down the stretch?

While we’ve got another four weeks to sort out everything in the regular season, we don’t in this exercise. So, pop quiz, hot shot: Which four teams would you put in a NFL playoff? And in what order?
