The world’s most exciting soccer league returns on Aug. 13. Will Manchester City successfully defend its Premier League title, or will there be a new name on the trophy come summer 2022?

Opening weekend features an intense local rivalry between Man United and neighbours Leeds, while top flight new boys Brentford welcome Arsenal. Here's all you need to know ahead of the big kickoff.

Brentford vs. Arsenal

Friday, Aug. 13 at 3:00PM | Live stream

In 2007, Brentford were still playing in the fourth tier of the English pyramid and faced relegation into non-league football. A fairytale journey later and they're set to make their Premier League debut, and a return to England's top flight for the first time since 1947.

Striker Ivan Toney, who scored 31 goals in the Championship last season, will be the key man in their fight to avoid relegation. Unfortunately for the Bees, the team lacks enough quality up and down the lineup to hope for anything more than survival. However, in this Premier League curtain raiser, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Brentford upset the Gunners.

Arsenal finished a lowly eighth last campaign and Champions League qualification looks beyond their means this year. The addition of Ben White has strengthened a backline that has too often looked vunerable but without further reinforcements, Mikel Arteta's men can't hope for anything more than a top-six finish. On a more positive note, youngsters Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe give Arsenal's offence a spark, one that's likely to give Brentford problems on Friday night.

Man United vs. Leeds United

Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7:30AM | Live stream

Manchester United look set to contend for the Premier League title once more, following the signings of winger Jadon Sancho and defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. Sancho, 21, finally completed a much anticipated £73m transfer from Borussia Dortmund, where he scored 50 goals and registered 64 assists.

The Red Devils open the 2021-22 season by welcoming fierce local rival Leeds United to Old Trafford. Leeds impressed last campaign by finishing ninth in their first season back in the top flight since they were relegated in 2004. The Whites have bolstered their defence this summer with the signing of Junior Firpo from Barcelona. On the offensive end, Marcelo Bielsa's side have been shored up by Jack Harrison's permanent move from Manchester City but the Argentine bench boss will need striker Patrick Bamford and partners to shine once again if Leeds are to maintain their Premier League competitiveness.

In Manchester, the major remaining question mark hangs over Paul Pogba. Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with the French midfielder but boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident Pogba will stay and sign a new contract. If so, a revitalized United should have too much for Leeds this weekend and for most sides that come to Old Trafford this season.

Tottenham vs. Man City

Sunday, Aug. 15 at 11:30AM | Live stream

There are two words hanging over this opening weekend fixture. Harry. Kane.

The striker believes he has a gentleman's agreement with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy but Tottenham are unlikely to let him head north to Manchester for anything less than £150m, which would smash the English record transfer, set only last week when Jack Grealish joined the Cityzens for £100m.

Without Kane, who won the Premier League golden boot last season, Spurs will struggle to reclaim a Champions League qualification spot. With Kane, Manchester City would have the final piece in Pep Guardiola's puzzle in the club's quest for Europe's top prize.

This fixture always guarantees goals. England's captain is usually amongst them. Whichever colours Kane wears on Sunday, if he's available following a late return from Euros duty, those goals will never mean more.
