What can the Jaguars do about their enormous Blake Bortles problem?

It’s good to know there are things in life we can depend on. The sun will rise in the east, Alabama will make the College Football Playoff, “The Big Bang Theory” will be unfunny and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles will give out pick-sixes like he’s making a holiday donation to the Salvation Army.

At this point the Jaguars probably plan on Bortles spotting the other team six points with a terrible interception returned for a touchdown. He threw his 11th career pick-six Sunday, and that was a huge difference in a 20-10 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Amazingly, Bortles now has more pick-sixes in his career (11) than victories (10).

In the third quarter Bortles threw a terrible pass under pressure over the middle that was picked off by Bradley Roby and returned 51 yards for a touchdown. That turned a 10-3 Broncos lead into a 17-3 advantage. It was Bortles’ third pick-six in four games. His 11 pick-sixes leads the NFL since the beginning of the 2014 season.

Sunday was a game the Jaguars could have won, with the Broncos and rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch turning in 13 three-and-out possessions, according to CBS, but Bortles was terrible. He was 19-of-42 for 181 yards, and with the Jaguars down a touchdown late in the game he lost a fumble that effectively sealed the loss.

What can the Jaguars do with Bortles? His mechanics have become so bad, he’ll need a complete overhaul just to be competent.

It’s hard to believe the Jaguars can draft a quarterback next spring. Bortles was the third pick of the draft in 2014. He has put up some decent numbers, though almost entirely in garbage time. And it’s not like this year’s draft has any can’t-miss prospects at quarterback, even though the Jaguars will have a high selection. But it would be nearly impossible for the Jaguars to turn back now. Bortles is only 24 years old. They can’t just hit the reset button before his fourth season starts.

Just as troubling: Bortles doesn’t look like a decent quarterback. He has regressed as badly as any once-promising young QB in recent memory. There will assuredly be a new coaching staff in Jacksonville, and perhaps that staff can figure out how to fix Bortles.

But he’s broken now. And unless the Jaguars figure out a solution, they’re going to continue to lose at an astonishing rate. It’s hard for any team to win when its quarterback keeps giving away touchdowns to the other team.
