Schalke’s American midfielder Weston McKennie will have an MRI on his left leg after injuring his hamstring in Wednesday’s Champions League round of 16 loss to Manchester City, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday via its social media channels.

Schalke’s official English-language Twitter account said the issue concerned McKennie’s thigh:

However, it appears some nuance was lost in translation. Schalke’s main Twitter feed states, in German, that “a muscular injury to the rear thigh” or hamstring, “could be present” in the 20-year-old U.S. men’s national team standout, per Google Translate.

The news is concerning to both Schalke and the USMNT. The Texan has been in fine form of late and was involved in his side’s first goal on Wednesday. City’s 90th-minute winner by Raheem Sterling came after McKennie was substituted from the contest.

Hamstring injuries are notoriously slow to heal, and McKennie has several important games quickly approaching for both club and country. Schalke will attempt to overturn its one-goal deficit at the City of Manchester Stadium on March 13, just eight days before McKennie is slated to play for new United States coach Gregg Berhalter for the first time in a friendly against Ecuador in Orlando. The U.S. also meets South American champ Chile in McKennie’s home state — that game will be in Houston — on March 26.

McKennie missed five Bundesliga games earlier this season because of an unrelated thigh bruise he suffered in a match against Bayern Munich. That ailment also forced him to withdraw from the USMNT roster for October friendlies versus Colombia and Peru.

McKennie, an FC Dallas academy product, has appeared in 17 league games this for Schalke this season, scoring once and adding three assists. He has also featured in six of the Royal Blues’ seven Champions League games, scoring a game-winning goal in the group stage at Lokomotiv Moscow.
