Western Michigan’s leading tackler won’t return for the 2017 season.

The program announced Monday night that linebacker Robert Spillane, a junior in 2016, has been granted his release. In the Broncos’ 2016 MAC championship season, Spillane had 111 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Spillane also had 46 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss in eight games in 2015 and 67 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and four sacks in 2014 as a freshman.

Per The Detroit News, Spillane has not graduated, so he would need to sit out in 2017 wherever he lands per the NCAA’s transfer requirements. It’s “possible,” the paper wrote, Spillane could link up with former WMU head coach P.J. Fleck, who is now in the same role at Minnesota.

After Fleck left for Minnesota, Western Michigan hired Tim Lester, who played quarterback for the Broncos from 1996-1999.
